Beauty Vixen

*Features PR Samples
My time has been sparse since going back to work in the spring. I found myself skipping skincare and makeup many nights just because I was too darn tired and rushed. I finally decided to get my act together and develop a 5-minute makeup routine that I could make time for any day. For the last few months, this simplified routine has been done with just Almay products.

So without further ado, my 5 Minute Almay Face.
Almay Clear Complexion Foundation Makeup /  200 Buff
My skin has been acting up this year, I blame stress, hormones and mask-acne. Almay Clear Complexion Foundation is for people prone to acne, combination skin and oily skin. Since my skin is mainly dry I have to use some hydrating primer first, but I do love how this foundation treats my skin.

It is lightweight and buildable. I prefer to use a sponge-like a Real Techniques or a Beauty Blender. Failing that a dampened buffing foundation brush. I need little of the foundation to get the coverage I usually need, evening out around my brows, nose and cheeks. I usually skip powder when using this foundation.

Almay Velvet Foil Cream Eyeshadow / 100 Silver Lining / 030 Golden Vibes
Eyes typically take the most time in my makeup application. Primer, shadows, blending buffing, liner, etc. To pair this down to a quick 5-minute face a cream shadow seemed to be the way to go.

Almay Velvet Foil Cream Eyeshadows are beautiful metallic cream shadows. They are easy to use with tons of payoff. I tiny bit can become an entire eye look so easily. I like to take my ring fingers and apply them. In this case, I am using Silver Lining on the inside and Golden Vibes on my outer lid. The result is something easy that lasts all day long.

Almay One Coat Multi-Benefit Mascara / Black
A mascara that doesn't look like too much is something I want right now. I don't want clumps, I don't want brittle lashes, I want natural and I want it quick. Almay One Coat Multi-Benefit Mascara is just the mascara I want. It gives volume, length, definition and conditioning. It isn't the boldest mascara, but it is really nice to my lashes and I think it looks great on me.

Almay Brow Styler Brow Mascara / Medium Brown
Brows are something I have to do all the time because I colour my hair (oh and newfound greys popping up), so something like a brow mascara that is easy is my go-to right now. This one has a long and thin brush that is quite nice to use. I bent my brush so that I could use it with more ease. It doesn't have a ton of hold, which I actually like because I don't want crunchy brows. What it does do is tame my brows and tint them just right in just seconds.

Almay Lip Vibes Lipstick / Treat Yourself
Nothing makes me feel more put together than a nice red lip. A classic matte red lip is where it is at for me. Treat Yourself is just that lipstick. It goes on smooth, it looks great, it doesn't snag on the application and it doesn't feather as the day goes on. For added staying power I sometimes dust it with translucent powder.
Lip Vibe Lipsticks come in cream, matte and lip topper finishes. They contain Shea Butter,  vitamin E and C so they help hydrate your lips.
So there you go, my 5 Minute Face. I am really loving these products and I reach for them almost every single day.  I feel much more confident and it really isn't taking up any time at all.

I love that Almay is fragrance-free so they don't upset my sometimes sensitive skin and that their eye products are Ophthalmologist tested.

Day to day I am glad I found something easy that works well for me and that I really enjoy wearing.

Almay has been a drug store staple for years, recently they launched a few new items that I was lucky enough to receive samples to review.

I am super excited to try these new items out, it has been a long time since I have tried anything from Almay but I have always had such good experiences with the brand that new items have me excited.

Smoky Eye Trios in Coppery Blaze and Smouldering Embers
These trios try to make shadow application easy for those who may not be the best at figuring it all out. With three shades clearly intended for different spots on the eye.

Coppery Blaze has green as its lid colour with charcoal as its crease and off white-green shade for highlight. Smouldering Embers is a Taupe for its lid, dusty purple for the crease and a light champagne-pink for the creases.
Copper Blaze
Smouldering Embers
Both these trios have lovely shades in them, but the payoff is mixed. Smouldering Embers has a softer texture and applies well because of it, while Coppery Blaze is stiffer and it takes a lot of work to get any pay off from it.

Goddess Gloss in Dreamy and Flame
I am not a huge lip gloss fan, but these glosses have won me over. They are prismatic glosses that are just pigmented enough that they work great on their own or even better as a topper. They are not sticky or goopy on the lips, which is a big part of why I love them.
Flame is a berry shade with flecks of shimmer in it. Dreamy is my favourite and it is a light pink-purple with a prismatic duo chrome reflection to it that works really well when I use a purple highlighter on my face.

Make Them Jelly Hi-Lite / Illuminator in 24k Dreams and Unicorn Light
These are shimmer jellies, and when I say shimmer I mean SHIMMER. The gel feels thick and not like a skin product but more a body product and the shimmer itself if very large and chunky.
24k Dreams has golden shimmer, while Unicorn Light has pink.
I realize that we are hitting the end of the '90s, beginning of the '00s in the make trend cycle and this actually seems quite in line with what I remember of the whole Y2K era. While not for me and most likely not for most faces it might make for a great body product.

Velvet Foil in Cupid Glaze and Golden Vibes
These foils come in little tubes that instantly remind me of Mac Paints (sadly discontinued). Packaged in a plastic tube that let you have good control over how much you can squeeze out.

I teenie-tiny amount of the cream shadow is all you need to get a ton of pigment that will create a foil effect. They take a few minutes to dry, so you have time to get them looking right on your lids. I like buffing them with a brush to avoid strong lines.
The brand boasts that they will last up to 24 hours and will not crease, smudge or fade. I had good results wearing them, I did make the mistake on wearing them on a particularly sweaty day at work so I did get some shimmer fall-out as the day went on, but overall they are quite spectacular and look amazing.

Cupid Glaze is a Rosey shade while Golden Vibes is an old gold shade. Both have lots of shimmer in them.
Shadow Squad in Unicorn and Less is More
These are single pan shadows that have one shade in four finishes. A matte, satin, metallic and glitter all in a monochromatic pan.

Unicorn is white and all the shades come off chalky, I really couldn't capture the shades that well in photos. Less is More is a light nude shade that is a lot more pretty and photographic.
Less is More
I created a look using the Smokey Eye Trio in Smouldering Embers, Velvet Foil in Golden Vibes as an eyeliner and finally Goddess Gloss in Dreamy on the lips.
Overall I think it was great to try out a bunch of new products from a brand that I was already familiar with.

I love the Goddess Gloss and would recommend it to just about anyone, I particularly like Dreamy. I think the Velvet Foils are fantastic and I will most likely be picking up some next time I see them on sale at my drug store.

The Smoky Eye Trios are pretty good for a drug store trio. They make creating a look easy and are not overly pigmented which actually makes them nice for a day or office look.

The Shadow Squad shadows are ok, I found them a bit chalky and pay off a bit iffy. but I generally like the idea. I think the quality depends on the shade so I would say they are a pass. The Make Them Jelly highlighters are just not my thing, they are too chunky and the gel doesn't play well with foundation.

Revlon recently sent me some products so that I could create my own Ethereal look. While the concept was a little out of my comfort zone, once I received the products I realized this was actually going got be very easy since I was already familiar with all of them.
Colorstay Full Cover Foundation: 110 Ivory
This foundation is fantastic. I cannot say enough good things about it. It is a full coverage, long lasting and self-setting foundation that doesn't get dry on me. I love that it is in a tube, so I can control exactly how much comes out and it isn't bulky.

The texture of it is a bit fluffy and almost mousse-like, but not quite. It can be built up to a solid medium coverage and works well dabbed over any blemishes to cover them up. I like to either use a buffing brush or a sponge to apply it. My skin is super dry and it never looks cakey or flakey on it, I always get good results.
PhotoReady Galaxy Dream: Holographic Highlighting Palette:
This palette was featured in my Favourites of 2018 and for good reason, I love it. It features four shades of highlight that can be used together in so many ways to create fantastic looks. There is a pink, grey, green and purple shade in the palette.

I really love adding the green to my brow bone. The pink and purple shades mixed together in place of blush and the silver almost like a contour (just below my blush).
I know this doesn't pop in the photos, but it looks fantastic in person. There is no shimmer to the palette so it works really well if you don't like shimmer or glitter. It also makes it much more wearable for day to day looks. It makes you look like you are glowing without the need for glitter.

ColorStay Creme Eyeshadow: 755 Licorice & 760 Earl Grey:
I love a good cream eyeshadow and love that Revlon has launched these babies. Not only are they amazing quality that is just as good, if not better than my high-end shadows, they also make some pretty fun shades. While all the other ones I have in my collection are matte, these two are metallic, making them perfect for my look.
I used the light silver Earl Grey shades in my inner third of the eye. I then applied the darker silver shade, Licorice to the outer third of my eye, crease area and my bottom lash line.  I then buffed it with a brush out and added some mascara and I was done.
Earl Grey on the left and Licorice on the right.
I really loved how these applied, how creamy they were, how they blended and stayed put all day long! These two shades were so shimmery and fantastically perfect for the look. Even though they are metallic, they don't feel gritty, which is another great sign of their quality. They even come with their own little brushes that slide into the lids.

Kiss Cushion Lip Tint: 290 Extra Violet & 230 Naughty Mauve
These are some interesting lip products. They click up through a sponge and you can dab them on. After they set (about 10 minutes), they stay put and have a dry finish. They definitely are a comfortable product to wear.

I have two shades, but I chose to use the deeper Extra Violet shade for my look.
Naughty Mauve on the left and Extra Violet on the right.
The look:
So here is my finished look. My skin is matte and has some decent coverage without the need of any concealer.
My cheeks feature a variety of shades of highlight to give it depth, colour and an interesting glow without shimmer.

My eyes are the focal point, lots of shimmer and glow that radiate out into a fade that is topped off with some green highlight under the brow bone.

Finally, a nice deep lip shade to give some contrast between the lighter eyes and cheeks.

I really love how this look turned out, I feel it has an out of this world glowy look that is wearable any time of the day.
What do you think of the look? Do you like to go a bit out of your comfort zone from time to time?

Nothing says late glamour like Red Carpet Season, and while it might be wrapping up this week with the Oscars, there is plenty of glam to be had with L'oreal Paris' new items for Spring. Today I'm going to look at some of their new items and create my own Red Carpet look using just 5 items (yep, 5 items, I'm crazy like that).
First up is L'oreal's Lumi Cushion Buildable Luminous Foundation. This is their first cushion foundation and mine too. The idea is simple you open it up, take the sponge and dab it into the sponge that is saturated in the foundation. You then take that sponge (or cushion) and dab it onto your face in layers until you are happy with the coverage.
Ok, so I do not know what to say about this one other than I am in love. LOVE  I say, it goes on so smooth and even without much effort at all. It blends out so well and even. It is only a medium coverage, so you may still need a concealer, but man is it great foundation for a natural look. My skin looks so real in it, which is a strange thing to say, it certinly dosn't look fake or cakey at all. Just perfect. This might be my new everyday work foundation.
Next up is the Voluminous SuperStar Red Carpet Black Mascara. This is a two step mascara meant to lengthen your lashes. With a first white step that volumizes and a second fiber black step that extends the lashes it deliverers some longer lashes then I am used to getting from just a mascara. I don't find that the white is visible at all once the black is applied. Also, many times I find the white layer to be too dry in these types of products, but not with this one, it goes on just like a normal mascara would.
Brows might not be everyone's thing, but to me a good brow product can make my day. Since I colour my hair I rely on brow products to make me look normal and not crazy with mismatched brows to my hair. Since my hair is currently purple I need to darken my bows quite a bit (oh yeah and there are grays in there too now). L'oreal's Brow Stylist Definer in Dark Brunette I am able to make my bows Red Carpet ready with little effort at all. It has an automatic thin pencil which also retracts (a rare thing) and a nice spooly on the end (why cant all spoolies be like this one?). Any way I work it, a few strokes of this and my brows are darker and nicely filled in.  The only down side I would say is I think I will be going though it pretty fast since whatever I extend out seems to get used up quickly.

When I first saw L'oreal's Black Velvet Liner I thought it was a powder, but really it is a pen liquid liner with a fuzzy tip. The tip is flat shaped making it incredibly unique. It also means it takes a while to get used to it. If you want a nice thin line on your eyelids that is thin, that is actually really easy to do since it is such a wet formulation. Creating a cat eye is another thing, that took a bit of practice of me.  I am pretty bad at getting my own wings to match up (other peoples I am a pro at it), so I always have a makeup removing q-tip handy, and this was n o exception. I think if you want to create the perfect wing every time this might not be fore you, but if you want to create thickening and bolder liner looks It really might be for you. Anyways, bellow is a pick of what I did with it and I am quite happy to say I will continue to be using the liner for some time to come because it has an incredibly soundproof formula, and when it comes down to it, that is what matters the most to me, everything else just takes practice.

Here you can see how everything kind of comes together. My brows look great, well shaped and the right shade. My liner is tight to my lashes and have a crisp look to them. my lashes are long anand defined. No white primer showing at all. Finally you can see my skin looks really good. I wore this look all day and night and it didn't smudge one bit.
So all I added to this look was a L'oreal Pro-Matte Gloss. I could have chosen a red lip to be really Red Carpet Glam, but instead I chose a Fuchsia, Amnesia to be exact . You can check out my full review on the glosses here.
So there you go, four new items I am loving from L'oreal that I think are Red Carpet worthy.

Is there anything you just love in a Red Carpet Look?
