Lifestyle things are a part of our daily lives, but I feel I don't always give them the respect they deserve. Today, I wanted to talk about a few things I really have been enjoying lately and have improved my quality of life.

I was inspired by the video of Danny Pudi talking with Larry King, stating a cup of coffee and socks are his luxuries. It made me think sometimes you really appreciate things that are just there in your life, and you are grateful that they are there.

Brita Water Filter

We got a fridge with a water filter a few years back, but we don't have a hookup for it. After decades of seeing my hubs reach for any cold beverage in the fridge instead of just getting water, I decided to finally get a Brita. But I didn't want a pitcher, I knew that wasn't for us. So, I got one with a dispenser. It lasts forever between refills (it holds 27 cups of water), and getting a cool beverage whenever we want is easy. The water tastes better, too.

Until we actually get that fridge water dispenser hooked up, this is the one thing in our kitchen I use daily that I really wish I had gotten years ago.

Nespresso

We got a Nespresso Original machine for Christmas 2019, and it saved me during lockdowns. I can make the hubs his straight espresso, and I can make my lattes. They both taste great, and I don't miss Starbucks at all. When it comes to pods, I like Nespresso,  but we often get Lavazza or Illy. This past week, we chose to take advantage of a Black Friday deal and get a Vertuo machine using our credit card points. Now, we can also have easily larger cups of coffee on demand that actually taste good.

I feel if you love a fancy coffee but don't have the willpower or energy to use an espresso machine in the mornings or the money for a fancy machine, these are perfect for you. They cost less than $150, and you get fancy coffee with just the press of a button. I gave away a Keurig I got years ago because it made weak and terrible coffee, this is a whole different world.

Heated Blanket

My basement is where we spend most of our time, and it can get chilly. Right now, we're postponing turning on the heat. So a heated blanket is really nice. I often get really cold, so it's a nice little treat to not have cold toes while watching a movie. I also find I get really chilly in the evenings as I settle in for the night, as my body is no longer moving and cooling down. I also really hate having cold feet.

A post shared by Costco Finds Canada (@costcofindsca)

This honestly wasn't something I ever thought I needed, but I truly love using it every evening. I picked mine up at Costco a few years back and use it almost every day.

Candle Warmer

this one is ridiculous, but I wanted one forever. They are lamps that warm up your candles, so you don't have to worry about lighting them and forgetting about them.

I picked up two at Marshall's, and they've been great. I no longer worry I am going to burn my house down with candles, and my house smells great.

The lesson really is that if you want something for a long time, you probably should just go get it, in my case two.

Ember Mug

This one is odd. Last November, I decided I wanted an Ember mug for when I started at home college. I did not want to worry about my tea or coffee getting cold. I almost bought one in the USA at a Best Buy but chose not to. The next day at Costco back home, I saw it on sale for $110. I put it in my cart so fast. It was such a good deal.

This mug has a charging base and uses Bluetooth through a phone app to keep your hot beverage at the right temp for long periods. Now mine is a 414 ml, this year's Costco model has no handle but a lid.

While I love the mug, it isn't big, and I find if I am going to drink my drink fast it isn't necessary. But for my second cup of tea of the day that I sip, it is great.

It does have a limited battery time, and the time it takes to cool the cup to the right temp does come out of that battery life, so maybe don't turn it on right away. For coffee, that is already the right drinking temp, it is probably the ideal mug.

Basically, I love it, but it still has flaws. I also love my Yetti cup for keeping things cold or hot forever! It is usually on my desk with ice and water or iced tea.

Fresh Ground Coffee

I went to Bluesky (hey, follow me there if you are using it) and asked for suggestions. My friend Melissa said fresh ground coffee. I fully agree. I love my Nespresso because they simplify the task with little thought, but nothing beats fresh ground coffee.

Last summer, we went to the Yukon and Alaska, and our gift to ourselves in each place we visited was locally roasted coffee. Now my father once got me a little $15 coffee grinder, and it has done us well over the last 20 years, but getting a burr grinder that ensures a consistent grind is so much better. I am eyeing getting one after the holiday season so that we can start refilling out Nespresso pods and using some fun coffees we have been getting.

On that note, I have been getting coffee at Bean Wise, which has a few locations. Their German Chocolate Cake Coffee makes the whole house smell amazing.

So those are the little luxuries I like right now. I honestly want to start thinking this way more often and appreciate what I have and why I have it. Does it serve a function? Does it make me happy? Is it something I have wanted forever? Is it going to give me a mini upgrade? Is it going to make my life better? These are all things to think about.

What are your everyday luxuries?

A year ago I signed up for PC Optimum Insiders Subscription. Now that the year subscription is up I thought it would be a great time to delve into whether or not it was worth the money.

I started with a free month in mid January 2021, when I was off work due to another Provincial shut down. Stores were essentially all closed except for essentials. Every time we tried to go to a grocery store we found them crowded and had long lines to get in and check out. I thought trying out the service would be great, and it was. We ordered groceries and picked them up, in and out of a No Frills in 5 mins flat. So, I signed up for a year.

A year costs $119 + taxes a year, making it essentially $10 a month.

What do you get for that $119 a year, well lets find out.

Free PC Express
You get free use of PC Express services. These are pickup slots at Loblaws based stores. They vary from $3 to $5 depending on where you go. We usually used No Frills so we saved $3 each time we used it.
If you use PC Express a lot, this will pay for the membership very quickly.

Sadly we only used it 10 times since the full sign up because.....the service went to trash. Every time we ordered something was rotten, moldy or just unacceptable. Once a bag of grapefruits was fully moldy on pickup, I cannot understand how a shopper would pick that bag and say 'that looks good'. This happened more then it didn't and I got very sick of calling just to get a coupon for the value for next time. I finally said I want my money for those items back on my credit card because I wont be using PC Express again, and I didn't.

It is worth noting the discount dose not apply to deliveries.
PC Travel
You get 5% of the value of your purchases with PC Travel back in PC Optimum Points. That means 50 points for every dollar spent. I did not use this at all as I did not travel the last year. I am guessing if you like their travel service this could be worth while for you. Originally they gave an actual discount when people signed up with the subscription, but they discontinued that.
Joe Fresh
Joe Fresh orders get free shipping with no minimum and 10% back in PC Optimum Points (that is 100 points for each dollar spent).

I did one Joe Fresh order in the spring, I really haven't been buying much clothing since I am not leaving the house much other than work so it hasn't been necessary. That being said I did like my order and got a bunch of bonus points because a deal was running at the time.

It is important to note that Joe Fresh already has free Canadian shipping when you spend $25, which is very little, so this may not be worth it.
Shoppers Drug Mart
At Shoppers Drug Mart's website you get free shipping on any order (vs the $8 or $50 minimum for free shipping), as well as all the usual points and deals they have going on online.

I did use this one a bit. My mother in law lives in the Yukon where she couldn't get her hair care anymore, I sent her some stuff and it was free. Shipping to her is usually an expensive task as even amazon prime costs a minimum of $35 for me ship her anything at this point. I also ordered myself a few product my store just didn't have since I didn't want to travel around looking for it during pandemic.
PC Products
Every time you buy a President's Choice/PC product you get 10% back in points, which is 100 points for every dollar spent. This can add up to some solid points if you buy a lot of PC products. We do enjoy some regularly but didn't want to change our product choices just to get point.
There is a handy slider on the site which lets you see how much money you 'get back' at the end of the year depending on what you spend. At $23 a week you would earn just enough points to cover the costs of the subscription.

Welcome Box
Finally you get a welcome box when you join. I was super excited about it but massively let down. I saw a lot of neat boxes over the year, and they always change, but mine was not good. I forgot to take a photo, but did do a Instagram story, so I screen capped the images. Welcome boxes are only available to new members, you only get one in your first year.

I got a wooden spoon ($8 value), Black Label pesto ($5 value), Black Label pasta ($4 value) and napkins ($3 value??? I am guessing). Absolutely unimpressive. Maybe because the pasta never cooked even after 40 minutes of boiling or that the pesto kind of sucked, or I don't know, napkins and a wooden spoon? Really? Meh.
Overall I did not get the full value of membership because we didn't use PC Express enough and did buy enough PC products. According to PC the 13 months (free month included in this) says we saved $108 dollars, which mean we almost broke even with points. We ended up getting a Nintendo Switch with points, so our goal was met, but I could have spent the money directly on it instead of the subscription.

I did find that most of the time I got better points offers during the time, but I am not completely sure if that was a coincidence or not. I also found that I could still leave the grocery store with zero points because we didn't buy PC products or the few select items that could earn points that week. It felt frustrating, especially when spending big bucks at the grocery store now a days.

Would I get PC Optimum Insiders Subscription again? Not now. Right now I have ended my membership, but if they offer a discount code (in the past there have been ones for 25% off) or a massive point bonus, I would consider it.

I hope this helped you get the full scope of the subscription program. Have you tried it? Did you like it?

I've been inspired by my blogging buddies Renée and Jayne to start writing about more lifestyle, but also the things that make me happy. This isn't always easy for me because I have tons of self doubt about just about every action I do I life. So let's try to be positive and keep things sunny.

1. I did a blog post.
View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jill Oliver-Fox - Blogger (@beautyvixenca)

I wrote a post this week on Keri Clinical Care line. I really adored the line so it was a fun post to do. I am happy I got the first blog of the year under my belt. I was having some writers block and to be honest the best way to beat it is to just write. I am glad I did. I am also happy to be writing this post. Keeping the momentum going.

2. I got a Kobo.
I have been wanting to get an eraser for a bit. My coworker and few friends got ones this holiday season and it got me wanting one. I see so many people reading books and I just haven't.  Hopefully I can kick start a new hobby this year.
I got mine at Shoppers Drug Mart with gift cards so it was free to me, plus 20 times the points. I am excited it works with my local library too.
I got the Kobo Libra H2O so it is waterproof and since I spend hours in the bath it makes me happy.

3. It was Mr. Fox's birthday.
Mr Fox had his birthday Thursday.  🎂.  While exciting it was nice he had the day off and we could spend a bit of time together.
He requested Craig's Cookies so I got him a dozen. He also wanted Taco Rice, which is an Okinawa street food. Basically sticky rice with taco fixings. It was tasty. He also got a copy of Mario Kart from me for the Nintendo Switch.
4. Bradley got a bath.

I've been putting of grooming Bradley for a bit. I am very glad I got to do it after all the snow that we had. He smells great and is fluffy so it am very happy.

5. I got a fruit and veggie box.
Today I got a produce box from FoodShare. FoodShare is an affordable way to get a whole pile of produce every week (they also have organic, fruit boxes and many other things). This cost us less than $30 and I am already excited for all the food I am going to eat. They also are a charity that help those living with food insecurity.

Each week gets a different selection, this was this weeks:
  • 1 bunch banana
  • 1 cabbage green
  • 1lb carrots mini
  • 1 cucumber field
  • 1 bunch kale green
  • 1 head lettuce iceberg jumbo
  • 1 bunch onion green
  • 4 oranges
  • 4 pears
  • 2lb potatoes yellow
  • 1 bunch thyme
  • 1 tomatoes grapes
Ok there are 5 things I am happy about for this week.

I recently received some RuckPack energy shots from Brand Backer to review. While I am not a big energy drink or shot person, Mr. Fox is quite the fan. We both work really exhausting jobs and he happens to really love working out. Sadly because of our jobs work-outs can easily be skipped due to lack or energy or time. Mr. Fox decided to try out three different RuckPack energy shots to see if they could help with his fatigue and energy levels.

RuckPack is a brand developed by Marine Special Operations Forces to deliver not just the caffeine that most brand do, but also ingredients that help counter act caffeine's  crazy side effect and keep your brain sharp. So not just a body stimulant, but one that keeps your mind sharp too. In 2012 they went on SharkTank and got a deal with my two favourite Sharks, O'Leary and Herjavec (also the Canadian two sharks). Since then the brand has grown but kept to its values of donating 10% to charities while being made in the USA.

Now on to the products. We got three flavours to try out. Raspberry Grenade (non-caffeinated), Citrus Ambush (twice the caffeine) and Strawberry Assault (caffeinated). Each shot is 3 oz, which is quite large for an energy shot. Each formula contains ingredient to counter act mind fatigue as well as keep you alert. A-GPC is AlphaSize Alpha-Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline which is a brain nutrient, that helps combat memory loss. Theanine is a simulator of the brain that is found in nature with caffeine that helps produce a more focused mind while counteracting caffeine's attack on the nervous system. They also contain natural occurring caffeine, sugars and colours. Now, I am going to take a look at each option and what Mr. Fox thought of them.
Raspberry Grenade (NON-CAFF)
This baby has zero caffeine in it, to help boost you full of energy and fight off fatigue it has a bunch of ingredients  that sound amazing and do wonders. 150 mg of A-GPC  and Theanine as well as some other great stuff (it somehow has 425% of your daily value of Vit D so that is a bonus).

So what did Mr. Fox think? He found that at the end of a very long day or work that would have usually exhausted him (11 hours people), he still had a surprisingly amount of energy left and chose to go to the gym. He used the word SURPRISINGLY about 4 times because he really was surprised it still was working at the end of his work shift and without caffeine. He also found that he wasn't fatigued then next day like he is when he takes a Redbull or 8 Hour Energy drink. So that all sounded amazing to me. The only complaint he had was the taste was a little strange, it has an odd acidic taste that wasn't too nice. Nothing that he couldn't get past, since he really liked the effect the shot had on him.

Strawberry Assault (CAFFEINATED)
This is their 1:1 formula, with 120 mg of caffeine in it (a coffee has 80 mg in it), it also has 12o mg of Theanine and 150 mg of A-GPC. The caffeine comes from green tea so it isn't artificially derived.

When I asked Mr. Fox what he though, he told me he was really happy with this one. He loved the taste and found he didn't get any caffeine jitters like he might with other shots. He really enjoyed how he felt more focused at work and wasn't just buzzing around like a jacked up coffee junkie. As with the Raspberry Grenade he felt great the next day which was the biggest surprise of all.
Citrus Ambush (XTRA STRENGTH)
This formula has 2:1 caffeine and packs quite the punch at a whopping 240 mg  of it. It also has 120 mg Theanine and 150 mg of A-GPC in it. This has the same amount of caffeine as a venti iced coffee at Starbucks and close to the 300 mg max recommended daily dose. Fortunately it is small and has a bunch of  those ingredients that counter act the negative effects caffeine can have on the body.

This was the one formula I was a little worried about Mr. Fox taking, since it is so high in caffeine and he can be pretty sensitive to it (jitters, mood swings, unfocused), but it turns out it is his favourite one. He said it tasted the best, just fantastic! He also said he would have never known it had caffeine in it if he didn't read the bottle, he felt the same as when he had the Raspberry Grenade, focused, long drawn out energy for the whole day and lots when his work day ended so that he could go to the gym too. All the other good for your ingredients in the formula really do take that edge off making it a fanatic product.
While RuckPack isn't exactly for me, it really suits my hubby's life of 3 hour gym sessions after 10 hour work days as well as his just general work day stress and fatigue. I personally am going to get a case of the Caffeine Free Raspberry Grenade so that I can try it out at work ( I am always way too tired after work to go work out). I really like the fact they are naturally flavoured and caffeinated, the fact they were created by military who know what fatigue is all about and the importance of mental clarity during a trying situation. The added vitamins and nutrients in the formulas also is a great feature that is wooing me over.

I happen to have a code that gets you 20% off any order you do on their website, BB068. Head on over to www.ruckpack.com for more information on their product lines.

*this post features products that Brand Backer sent to me to review. All views and opinions are my/Mr. Fox's own.

I recently placed a Pretty Tea order. At the time they offered a Mystery Box filled with 250g worth of tea or rock sugar for $25. I ordered two of the Mystery Boxes, one as a gift and one for me. I am going to show the teas I am keeping from the order.

Red Rum:
Ingredients: Honeybush, almonds, safflowers, almond, macadamia nut and rum flavour.
I don't have too much to say about this one, nice slice of almond in it.
Coconut Chai:
Ingredients: Black tea , ginger root, green cardamom, chocolate chips and chocolate flavour.
This smells so coconuty....mmm.
Herbal Winter Elixir:
Ginger root, orange peel, mint leaves, eucalyptus, ginger and orange flavours.
This tea is touted as a cold remedy. I really like David's Tea's Cold 911 when I am sick, so I have high hopes for this one.
Lady in Blue:
Ingredients: Whole leaf black, blue mellow blossoms, lavender flowers and bergamot flavour.
All I smell when I first open this is lavender. The bergamot is not a very strong scent.
Melon Lemonade:
Honeydew melon cubes (honeydew melon, sugar), apple pieces, hibiscus blossoms, orange slices, flavoring, acidifying agent: ascorbic acid.
This blend featured very large chunks of dried melon. I assume it will make a fantastic iced tea.
Almond Cookie:
Green tea (80%), orange slices, planed almonds, flavoring, pink peppercorns, safflower.
This tea smells like almonds, sweet sweet almonds. Amaretto is what I think it smells like (surprisingly amaretto is not made with almonds but apricot pits).
Maple Walnuts:
Sencha green tea (80%), walnuts, brittle pieces (sugar, hazelnuts, invert sugar), almond pieces, flavouring.
This tea has gigantic walnut halves in it, but not too many. Sort of odd. It smells good.
Lemon Rock Sugar:
Sugar, flavours.
I like rock sugar, I do. I buy mine at Walmart or T&T in the tea section, but I pay less than $2.00 for a  bag with over 200g in it. This bag has 50g and I don't feel it will go very far. It does appeal to me for black tea.
Tea On The Beach:
Green tea (64%), lemon grass, pineapple cubes (pineapple, sugar), pineapple flakes, flavoring, freeze-dried acerola cherries, sour cherries, freeze-dried sour cherry pieces, safflowers.
This tea has pretty big pineapple chunks in it. It sounds like it will make a great iced tea in the summer time. Cherries, yum!
White Hibiscus:
Bai Mu Dan white tea, hibiscus, cornflowers, rose hips, with lychee, goji berry and cabernet flavors.
This tea comes in a bigger bag, since the teas are weighted some are physically bigger than others. I love hibiscus so this one makes me happy.  It also smells of lychees pretty strong and reminds me of the green lychee bubble teas I used to drink.
So that is the 10 items (9 teas and 1 sugar) I got in my Mystery Box. Now as I said, the mystery box no longer exists, but they still sell all of these teas on their site and in as little as 25g. I cannot wait to try them all out.

I found two codes that you can use to save if you want to do an order on their site.

FF10 to save 10% on an order  and 1FREESHIP on your first order. They do have free shipping on orders over $40. You can visit them at PrettyTea.ca .

As for now I am putting my teas in these containers I got at dollarama. I know I need to shield them from light, so I am going to keep it in my cabinet in the dark.
