Beauty Vixen

Mary Kay has launched a new limited edition jewel themed makeup collection for Fall 2021, Precious Gems. They also have launched a whole bunch of permanent items, but I will talk about them in another post. For now let us take a look at these gorgeous new limited edition items.
Sparkle Lipstick $21.00 Ruby | Sunstone
Adorn lips in gem-like pigment, and dial up your sparkle. Light up your lips in nongritty, glimmery color that feels as good as it looks. Ultrareflective, high-shine pearls create shimmering dimension, while moisturizing ingredients enrich the super-smooth formula. Amplify the natural beauty of your lips with the help of a little jewel-inspired glamour.

These may be some of the prettiest lipsticks I have ever seen. I have had ones that have been dipped in shimmer before, but these are actually sparkly in the inside too. Mary Kay has a fantastic lipstick formula to start with so these are extremely nice. They look so pretty I actually didn't want to touch them. The formula is smooth and feels nice and soft on the lips. I was actually really shocked because I expected a gritty texture, but nothing but smoothness.

Ruby is really a berry red with lots of shimmers thrown in, which vary between light purple and pink.
Sunstone looks like a Campaign shimmer shade in the tube, but actually has very little base shade to it. It is basically a sheer shimmer shade with milk nude peach in it, so your natural lip tone comes out. It looks absolutely fantastic, with warm toned shimmers in it.
Swatches: Ruby on top and Sunstone on the bottom

Shimmer Liquid Eye Shadow $18.00 Graphite | Amethyst
Achieve eye makeup euphoria! See ethereal effects in the jewel-inspired shades of this liquid eye shadow. There’s never been a better time to creatively experiment with new textures, and this lightweight, gel-based formula is the perfect way to add some prismatic shine to your everyday look. Smoothly glide on nongritty, metallic-pearl pigment for a look as dazzling as it is dimensional.

Liquid eyeshadows are always a favourite of mine, they're easy to apply, creamy, blendable and last a long time. These new ones from Mary Kay are super metallic.

I found a little goes a long way with them. I found that if I applied a little and blended it out I was left with a gorgeous shimmery eye without too much coloured applied (more of a coloured shimmer). I was able to layer it up and apply it thicker for a more opaque look, but I honestly think a nice shadow base with it on top would be a better option.

Amethysts is pale lavender, while Graphite is a silver-grey tone. Both are amazing for staying power and just generally looking stunning.

Swatches: Graphite on top an Amethyst on the bottom.
Nail Polish 9.2 g $12.00 Emerald | Rose Quartz

Let your hands in on the high-shine fun with a metallic-shimmer nail polish that comes in two brilliant shades. The nongritty formula full of rich color pigments will make creating a multifaceted manicure masterpiece the highlight of your day. Wear the jewel-inspired shades alone or as a dazzling duo in a manicure that’s sure to boost your mood.

I adore Mary Kay nail polishes, it is a shame they don't have them in their permanent line and only offer them a few times a year. That being said there is always a bit of excitement knowing that you never know when one will launch or what it will contain. In this case it is two gorgeous Metallic Shimmers that do not disappoint.

Emerald is a light minty metallic green-blue that has a sage or mint like quality to it. I cannot get over how absolutely stunning it is not just in the bottle but on my nails.

Rose Quartz reminds me of the stone it takes its name from. It is shimmery and light pink. The shimmer gives it a bit of a silver quality, really adding to the metallic finish of it. I have been wearing this on my toes and just can't stop staring at them.

Highlighter $18.00 Canary Diamond | Rose Sapphire
Dress yourself in absolutely radiant jewel-toned splendor. Catch the light in every day with this smooth, silky, light-reflecting powder that’s all glamour and no grit. Luminescent pearl shimmer captures just the right amount of sparkle, leaving your highlights beaming in brilliance.
Highly shimmery, these highlighters are sold on their own and can be used in Mary Kay's Perfect Palette (shown in my photos) or Pro Palette (both sold separately).
Canary Diamond is a light gold, while Rose Sapphire is a light soft pink. Both have quite the shimmer to them. The formula is super fine, which makes it smooth and blendable. I found the palettes quite soft so if you use a heavy hand when rubbing it with a brush you will see denting in the pattern quite quickly, so use a light hand if you can.
Now I just used my fingers to create the swatches, showing how actually pigmented and smooth the highlighters are, but they easily blend out into a very sheer, but extremely shimmery highlight.
Pink Clay Mask $20
Reset and destress with some floral-infused “me” time. Superstar ingredient plumeria extract is known to have antioxidant properties which help protect against free radicals on the skin. Now you can cleanse the day away in a perfectly pink way, with this mineral-rich clay mask that leaves you with a natural glow. Truly make the moment your own as you take in dreamy notes of dewy peony and tea blossom during the ultimate masking session. Steal time for yourself, and allow the luxe creaminess of this mask to cleanse and renew your skin while delighting your senses.

Mary Kay's skin care lines always impress me, so a new mask excites me.  This clay mask contains Plumeria which according to Mary Kay is loaded with antioxidants, something I have been learning a lot about lately (the gist is we need them, lots of them). It also has a peony and tea blossom scent to it.

It goes on light pink (that is the Plumeria) and dries up as it sits on your face. I found it was easy to remove once dry with a warm facecloth. I personally like to hold it over my skin for a few seconds before wiping the mask off.

I was pleasantly surprised with the mask because generally I don't do well with mud or clay masks, my skin gets reactive, but this mask my skin really happy. It felt smooth and soft after using it.

Catrice has made quite an impression on me since launching at Shoppers Drug Marts in Canada. Today I am going to talk about two products, HD Liquid Coverage Foundation and Liquid Camouflage High Coverage Concealer.
Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation
Hi-Def Coverage! Catrice's HD Liquid Coverage Foundation is an ultra-lightweight, high coverage foundation for a natural looking finish. • Vegan • Paraben free • 24 hr-wear • Cruelty free • Second skin effect -shoppersdrugmart.ca
Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation comes in 23 shades, it is high coverage with a natural finish. The formula is supposed to mattify the skin while lasting 24 hours all while having a lightweight formal and a natural skin finish. Let's take a look at how it worked for me.

The bottle has a nice frosted look to it and an eyedropper for application. It looks pretty darn high end for drug store and its $13.99 price tag.

The formula is relatively thin for a full coverage formula but dries quickly because of its long-lasting and mattifying qualities. Because of this I really like using a wet sponge to apply it (currently loving the Real Techniques sponges for it). I also like to work section by section in my face so that it doesn't dry up before I have a chance to smooth it out. I personally have dry skin so using a hydrating primer under makes it go on a lot smoother and better too. If I apply it on its own I find I get some flakiness around my nose.
The coverage is actually pretty light but buildable. I like to give a once over and then a second go for a fuller look.

As for the wear, I found it wore pretty darn long and into my day with powder and setting spray. I did find with my dry skin that powder wasn't as necessary and didn't actually make the foundation look great on me. It made it just a little too dry.

I have been using shade 05 Ivory Beige. Which to be 100% honest is my perfect shade. I could not ask for a better match for me. If you want to see some fairer shade comparisons head on over to CrystalCandy Makeup for some swatches.

A little while back I reviewed some new (to me) Catrice products, one of which was Catrice Liquid Camouflage High Coverage Concealer in 010 Porcelain, I was also sent with this foundation another shade to review 007 Natural Rose.
I personally really like the formula of these concealers. They are full coverage like the name implies, but also creamy and smooth. I have used them many times as the only product on my face and been quite happy. They blend out super easy and look great all day long without any creasing. It performs exceptionally well, especially since it is only $7.99 Cad.

010 Porcelain is a shade that almost has a beige quality to it, which at first I was thrown by, but love how it cancels out any red in my face. It is such a great shade for me to use for just about anything going on.

070 Natural Rose on the other hand runs peachy. This has become my go-to for undereye circles.

This concealer is good enough to use as your only complexion product but also can take a product that you don't want to use too much of up a level (like a sheer foundation).

I have been using it with the HD foundation on my blemishes and under eyes as well as around my nose.
How I really like to use these products together is by applying a hydrating primer, sponging on the foundation, applying concealer and setting with a spray. If you have actually normal or oily skin I would definitely recommend some powder.

Here are some photos of me wearing it mid-summer.
You can see I get a real natural look using the products but still the coverage I need.
Overall I am loving these products. The concealers are now my go-to product. They have the coverage I need while being fantastic for smoothing out and not looking thick. They look like my skin and I love that.

The foundation is great and a perfect option for when my skin is feeling a bit more oily then usual or I want a long-wearing option. It looks natural on my skin but can look a bit dry if I don't hydrate properly before applying or powder (once again, I have dry skin though).

If you are looking for some great drug store options I highly recommend picking these up at your local Shoppers Drug Mart or online.

Have you tried Catrice Cosmetics yet? What are your thoughts?

930 Maverick
Stand up and stand out, Maverick.
You're a rebel with a cause who shines in one of a kind colour. -the back of the package.
Revlon recently launched their Looks Book Eye Shadow Palettes. Aesthetically they are tiny, slim, adorable and feature each palettes name down the front.  Inside is a palette with 8 shades, matte, shimmer and metallic (the Insider palette is all matte). While I honestly thought this palette would be larger before I saw it in person, I was quite happy to see how tiny it actually was.
Maverick features a predominantly burnt orange shade range with some gold tossed in for good measure. At first, it reminded me of the Urban Decay Naked Heat / Naked Petite Heat palettes, both of which I have.
It is slightly smaller than the petite (or a basics) palette, and also thinner, making it a great palette for a purse, touch-ups or even a trip. Most of the shades don't align with the Petite Heat palette, they, for the most part, are pretty different.
On to the pigmentation. This palette amazed me with its pigmentation! I was in shock. I haven't swiped a palette for pay off like this in a long time, none the less from a drug store brand. They are bold and have great pigment to them. They also are incredibly buttery which lends to blending out really well.
An extra bonus is that this palette is made in Canada! Which you know, always gets me.
Overall I am loving this little gem, it has shades I like, a good amount of mattes as well as metallics and shimmer. The pans themselves are a bit tiny, but with the right shadow brush are no problem to navigate. The pigment and buttery texture make this palette well worth its cost. I am going to head out and get the Insider palette because I really want to try an all matte one.

Have you tried any of the Revlon ColorStay Looks Book Eye Shadow Palettes yet?

This month's theme over on the Canadian Beauty Blogger website is First Beauty Loves. This got me thinking about where some of my first beauty loves. The first thing that came to mind was Toast of New York Super Lustrous Lipstick from Revlon. I started wearing it when way back in 1994 when I was on the brink of turning 14 and wore it for at least 2 years straight. I know a lot of other people wore it through most of the 90s too!

The fact that the shade from my youth and is over 35 years old is still sold by Revlon got me thinking about what other classic or vintage shades of theirs are still being made (and sell out all the time). So with that, I bring you Six Classic Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick shades (and three new ones). All the classic shades are Creme formulated.
Shades left to right: Love that Red, Certainly Red, Fire and Ice,
Cherries in the Snow, Love that Pink and Toast of New York.
Love That Red (1951) creamy watermelon red
Love That Red is Revlon's original red lip shade. It has been around for 68 years and still looks fabulous. In fact, when Revlon launched their Street Chic collection of shades.
Love That Red was included as its Paris shade. Showing that it is timeless and trendy.

Certainly Red (1951) creamy strawberry red
Certainly Red is just as old as Love That Red, and just as iconic.
It is a red, it has some blue pink in it making it lean on the cool side and making it super wearable for those that might not be drawn to reds.

Fire and Ice (1952) creamy hot pink-red
Fire and Ice is probably the most iconic of all Revlon lipstick. It launched with an ad campaign
that featured model Dorian Leigh. It was a big deal and a huge hit for Revlon. It even has had its own perfume! Here is a great article on the campaign and the image created in it.
The colour runs a bit orange maybe coral but is easy to wear. Here is a great review from my friend Arianne on the shade, check it out.

Cherries in the Snow (1953) creamy fuchsia
The year after Fire and Ice, Revlon launched Cherries in the Snow and used Dorian Leigh again. The colour is still so popular that the matching nail polish is still in production.
The shade is a cherry pink. It is kind of pink, kind of red, but it is bold but wearable.

Love that Pink (1955) creamy watermelon pink
It seems that this shade was Monn Drops and Super Lustrous shade for a while (Revlon discontinued their Moon Drops line in a few years back), but the Super Lustrious is the original.
It is a pink that is warm with a red base. No bubble gum pink or fuschia here, just a classic wearable shade that doesn't get old.

Toast Of New York (1984) creamy bright auburn
This was the IT shade of the 1990s. Cindy Crawford was a hot commodity at the time, she was a supermodel and happened to have her on MTV show (House of Style) as well as being a Revlon spokesperson. You could easily find dozens of photos of her wearing it, as well as many other celebrities. The shade is still around, and I must say quite trendy as everything 90's is in right now.
It is a classic 90s brick red and I must have used up about 8 tubes of it in a two year period in the mid-90s.

On to some newer shades.....

Forward Magenta matte magenta-pink
This one is a matte shade that is part of the new Matte Is Everything Super Lustrous shades. They come in the same tube, just with a matte finish to it and have no window on the top. They go on super smooth and feel actually really hydrating for a matte lipstick.
This shade is just a flat out magenta and I love it. I find it so wearable even though it looks really bold in the tube. I got this one at an event last year where Revlon was relaunching the Super Lustrous Lipstick line with some new shades and this was one of them. I even got it custom engraved with Ms. Fox on it (swoon).

Rise Up Rose matte rose-brown
This one is another matte. Still soft feeling and pretty hydrating for a matte lipstick.
I am not one to wear straight up browns so I look for shades like this one. It is a brown that has pink tones to it (thus looking much more wearable on me).

Midnight Mystery pearlized navy blue
This shade is also part of the Street Chic collection, it represents London.
It looks black with blue shimmers in the tube, but it is pretty darn sheer on the lips with no visible shimmer. It definitely is a deep shade that leans blue. That being said, you can build it up quite a bit to a more deep finish. I personally love having a black that is not just a flat matte shade, I can mix this with other shades and make them a bit deeper too.
So there you go nine shades of lipstick from one of the most long-running and iconic lipstick formulas of all time.

I really love the formula of the Super Lustrous Lipsticks, they are creamy, hydrating and go on even and smooth. They also are unscented! Which is kind of a big deal for drugstore lipsticks. An extra bonus is you can often find them on sale for about $6 which makes them super easy to find and afford.

An added bonus for me is how smooth and evenly they do on over my lip scars. I have scars on the edge of my lips and often have a difficult time trying to get a liner to go over them easily, this formula applies over it with ease and you cannot even tell that have the scars after application.

What was the first beauty product you fell in love with?

*I bought 7 of these lipsticks with my own money, two I received as pr samples. All views and opinions are my own.
