Lifestyle things are a part of our daily lives, but I feel I don't always give them the respect they deserve. Today, I wanted to talk about a few things I really have been enjoying lately and have improved my quality of life.

I was inspired by the video of Danny Pudi talking with Larry King, stating a cup of coffee and socks are his luxuries. It made me think sometimes you really appreciate things that are just there in your life, and you are grateful that they are there.

Brita Water Filter

We got a fridge with a water filter a few years back, but we don't have a hookup for it. After decades of seeing my hubs reach for any cold beverage in the fridge instead of just getting water, I decided to finally get a Brita. But I didn't want a pitcher, I knew that wasn't for us. So, I got one with a dispenser. It lasts forever between refills (it holds 27 cups of water), and getting a cool beverage whenever we want is easy. The water tastes better, too.

Until we actually get that fridge water dispenser hooked up, this is the one thing in our kitchen I use daily that I really wish I had gotten years ago.

Nespresso

We got a Nespresso Original machine for Christmas 2019, and it saved me during lockdowns. I can make the hubs his straight espresso, and I can make my lattes. They both taste great, and I don't miss Starbucks at all. When it comes to pods, I like Nespresso,  but we often get Lavazza or Illy. This past week, we chose to take advantage of a Black Friday deal and get a Vertuo machine using our credit card points. Now, we can also have easily larger cups of coffee on demand that actually taste good.

I feel if you love a fancy coffee but don't have the willpower or energy to use an espresso machine in the mornings or the money for a fancy machine, these are perfect for you. They cost less than $150, and you get fancy coffee with just the press of a button. I gave away a Keurig I got years ago because it made weak and terrible coffee, this is a whole different world.

Heated Blanket

My basement is where we spend most of our time, and it can get chilly. Right now, we're postponing turning on the heat. So a heated blanket is really nice. I often get really cold, so it's a nice little treat to not have cold toes while watching a movie. I also find I get really chilly in the evenings as I settle in for the night, as my body is no longer moving and cooling down. I also really hate having cold feet.

This honestly wasn't something I ever thought I needed, but I truly love using it every evening. I picked mine up at Costco a few years back and use it almost every day.

Candle Warmer

this one is ridiculous, but I wanted one forever. They are lamps that warm up your candles, so you don't have to worry about lighting them and forgetting about them.

I picked up two at Marshall's, and they've been great. I no longer worry I am going to burn my house down with candles, and my house smells great.

The lesson really is that if you want something for a long time, you probably should just go get it, in my case two.

Ember Mug

This one is odd. Last November, I decided I wanted an Ember mug for when I started at home college. I did not want to worry about my tea or coffee getting cold. I almost bought one in the USA at a Best Buy but chose not to. The next day at Costco back home, I saw it on sale for $110. I put it in my cart so fast. It was such a good deal.

This mug has a charging base and uses Bluetooth through a phone app to keep your hot beverage at the right temp for long periods. Now mine is a 414 ml, this year's Costco model has no handle but a lid.

While I love the mug, it isn't big, and I find if I am going to drink my drink fast it isn't necessary. But for my second cup of tea of the day that I sip, it is great.

It does have a limited battery time, and the time it takes to cool the cup to the right temp does come out of that battery life, so maybe don't turn it on right away. For coffee, that is already the right drinking temp, it is probably the ideal mug.

Basically, I love it, but it still has flaws. I also love my Yetti cup for keeping things cold or hot forever! It is usually on my desk with ice and water or iced tea.

Fresh Ground Coffee

I went to Bluesky (hey, follow me there if you are using it) and asked for suggestions. My friend Melissa said fresh ground coffee. I fully agree. I love my Nespresso because they simplify the task with little thought, but nothing beats fresh ground coffee.

Last summer, we went to the Yukon and Alaska, and our gift to ourselves in each place we visited was locally roasted coffee. Now my father once got me a little $15 coffee grinder, and it has done us well over the last 20 years, but getting a burr grinder that ensures a consistent grind is so much better. I am eyeing getting one after the holiday season so that we can start refilling out Nespresso pods and using some fun coffees we have been getting.

On that note, I have been getting coffee at Bean Wise, which has a few locations. Their German Chocolate Cake Coffee makes the whole house smell amazing.

So those are the little luxuries I like right now. I honestly want to start thinking this way more often and appreciate what I have and why I have it. Does it serve a function? Does it make me happy? Is it something I have wanted forever? Is it going to give me a mini upgrade? Is it going to make my life better? These are all things to think about.

What are your everyday luxuries?

Are you a caffeine addict like me? I love my morning coffee and love a morning latte so much more. In an ideal world, I would have a latte every single morning. But it is summer so that means it is frappe season.

Lip Smacker has made my life a little bit more latte friendly with their new Frappe Lip Balm collection. With 5 yummy flavours you can enjoy a frappe that suites your taste the best.
These come in the same formula as the Disney Tsum Tsum and Coca-Cola Soda Balms. They are bullets in little frappe cups with their base in a cute little swirl of faux whipped cream. The formulas are dense so they don't smush when touched like a stick, are a bit waxy but bust coat your lips fantastically and hydrate super well.

Cinnamon Churro Frappe:

Fun fact about me, I am a bad Canadian who doesn't like maple syrup (*gasp*), but I do love cinnamon sugar all over things instead. So yeah I love cinnamon! I also order Cinnamon lattes a lot. This balm has a great cinnamon taste with a little something else that I just can't place, so I am assuming it is a light coffee essence. When I lick my lips all I get is the cinnamon though.

Caramel Frappe:
Caramel is so tasty and I love it so much, but I do find caramel frappes, they are just too darn sweet for me.  Lucky for me this has all the flavour of caramel without the sweetness.

Vanilla Chai Frappe:
I love Chair lattes, tea makes me super happy. This frappe balm has quite a kick of cinnamon to it.  It personally smells just like McDonald's Vanilla Chair Tea Iced Frappe, which I adore in the hot months.

Mocha Chip Frappe:

Chocolate makes me happy, but once again Mocha in a frappe can be a bit too sweet for my taste. This combo is perfect for a lip balm though, it smells just like bitter sweet chocolate chips.
Pumpkin Spice Frappe:

I am not going to lie, when pumpkin spice season starts in the fall I go a little nuts. It probably is just the combo of cinnamon, hazel nut and vanilla in the mix that drives me crazy, but none the less I am a sucker for it (FYI way more into ginger bread lattes, but love anything pumpkin spice, muffins, bread, gum). This balm gives off a great pumpkin spice flavour that isn't too strong or over the top.

Overall I am loving these balms, just like the other Lip Smacker options these one deliver in the hydration and lasting on my lips. I just adore the formula. I get to indulge all my coffee house loves every day without dishing out the calories of big bucks.

What is your favourite coffee house drink?

I was recently send a nice big pouch of Jealous Body Scrub to try out and review. It is a coffee and coconut based body scrub that is supposed to scuff off all my dead skin and leave it soft and moisturized. I being a massive coffee fan was super excited to give it a try.

What I was expecting is a coffee ground scrub, what I wasn't expecting was to fall in love. Why did I fall in love? Let's first look at the ingredients.
Coffee, coconut oil, raw brown sugar, sea salt and vitamin E.
It's a simple mix but it works really really well at 1) scuffing off the dead skin 2) getting a nice blood circulation going to the skin 3) moisturizing the skin.
scrub in a bowl
It's the 3 that really won me over. I like scrubs to leave me covered in a moisture, so much so that when I rinse the scrub off the water beads.  That's what I like and that's exactly what Jealous did.
back of packaging
So here's how I used it.
  1. I wet my body.
  2. I scrubbed it all over.
  3. I waited 5-10 minutes. (tip. put a hair mask on while you do this and kill two birds with one stone).
  4. I rinsed it off.
  5. I had a soft and smooth body with already moisturized skin.
legs in scrub
Pros:
  • Natural ingredients
  • Canadian Company
  • Simple ingredients
  • Smells like coffee and coconuts
  • Gives a really good exfoliation (that isn't too harsh)
  • Moisturizes the skin too
  • You can use it on the face too
  • Free shipping in Canada and the USA
  • It is a big bag and a little goes a long long way
  • Zipper pouch so you can keep it in the shower
Cons:
  • A little bit messy in the tub, but I think all scrubs are.
Overall:
This is a big pouch filled with so many good ingredients that it will last you a long long time, making it a great value.

I'm really enjoying this product. It is nice to use in my morning showers, it gets my skin exfoliated, soft and moisturized and the coffee scent helps wake me up (like the smell of  a fresh pot of coffee).

I'm loving using it on my hands, they are so dry and flaky from work I'm constantly getting a build up of dead skin between the fingers and it is gentle enough not to irritate the dry parts but also get the dead skin off effectively.

I love the hydration it gives my skin, the water just beads when I rinse the scrub. I just pat my body dry and get on my way, I get to skip moisturizer.

I really cannot attest to any of its claims regarding increasing blood flow and reducing the appearance of problem like cellulite and stretch marks. While I have these issues, I haven't been using it long enough to notice a difference and my stretch marks are not new, they are about 15 years old and already pretty faded (but still there). What I can say is that it really does in crease the blood flow to the skin, (because it gets all flush and tingly when I scrub,) and it has been shown that increased blood flow helps with the appearance of these issues.

I also like that this scrub just doesn't devolve away in my shower like many other ones. It also isn't too wrought like a few strictly salt scrubs I've tried in the past, and it isn't too wussy  a few others out there (The Body Shop Honeymania I'm looking at you, why are your granules so fringing tiny and melt right way in water?). Yep, I'm like Goldilocks that way, I want my scrubs just right.

Did I mention it smells like coffee and coconuts? I love my coffee.
my legs with scrub on them.
OK, so now you know I love this scrub and why? What types of body scrubs do you like? What do you look for in a good scrub.
