Beauty Vixen

This is part two of my Vintage Vanity series, I am continuing with the exploration of bars of soap that have stood the test of time. Today I am looking at the British favourite, Pears transparent soap.
History:
Pears was first made in 1807, in all its transparent amber oval bar glory. This British gem is known for having royal warrants leading back to Queen Victoria.

The bar has gone through some changes over the last 200+ years, mainly in 2009 and again for a relaunch in 2016. People really didn’t like the 2009 change, and made a Facebook petition, it lost its Royal Warrant and disappeared for quite a few years as a result. In 2016 it relaunched and tried to win back its old fans. It sounds like it is much better than the 2009 version, but not as good as the original.
The bars were first sold in London in 1807, its transparent colour was due to it being a glycerine-based soap, but was also a big part of its marking, promoting how ‘pure’ it was.

Things that make this bar unique are, a divot in the top, which is due to shrinkage as it sets (not moulding), but people love to smush their old bars into it, preventing waste. It is also clear, which at the time of release, was neat. It has a unique scent that is supposed to be that of an English Garden.
Review:
I immediately did not like the scent of this soap when I opened the box. It was overwhelming and unpleasant to me. I am used to a whole bunch of different types of scents, this was not one I had smelled before. After a few days of the bar in my shower, I either got used to it, or the unboxing potency faded and it was a lot better.

When I used it, I instantly felt a film on my body that I did not like. I did not find it rinsed off well unless I used a body wash mixed with it or afterwards. It wasn't the worst soap film, but not a great feeling.

It did do an excellent job cleaning like all soaps should. I did not smell bad after using it and the bar's scent did not linger.
Pros:

  • Cheap, at 3 75 g bars for under $4.00 CAD
  • Easy to find, can find it at dollar stores, grocery stores, and drug stores easily.
  • Cleans well, and removes odour easily.
  • Lathered well.
Cons:
  • I do not like the scent of this soap.
  • Residue feeling after using.
  • The scent did not linger.
  • Soap is wrapped in plastic, so not plastic-free.
Overall:
I did not like this soap. I can see why people got mad about the changes in it. It did not smell good, it did not feel good. I would not recommend it unless you could not find another bar to use.

From time to time, I use up a bunch of stuff, get tired of the packaging hanging around and do an empties post. Now is that time.

Up & Up Sport Sunscreen Stick

My mom brought me three of these a few years back. I really like them for travel or for touch ups on a day out. I first heard about it when my friend Melissa blogged about it. I really love them, unfortunately they expired on me, so what is left is going into my recycling pile.

Saje Well-Being Balancing Diffuser Blend

I got a set of Saje oils a long time ago. This has been a long time coming in the using it up department. I recently got a diffuser for my office and since I started online classes, I managed to use this up in the first few days. I liked it a lot but I have a lot of oils to use up. Plus, they stopped selling this scent.

Farmx Super Greens Cooling Gel

I got this sample size and two more, from Topbox to try out. I liked it a lot. I kept this one at work because it was tiny and made sense. I am still working on the other two, but it has been fantastic.

Trader Joe’s Hydrating Gel Moisturizer

I got this a long time ago, and well, I love it. It is everything everyone ever says about it. When I went to Buffalo and visited Trader Joe’s, I got a lot of skin care, but they were out of this. Lucky for me I have a backup.

Mary Kay Lash Love Waterproof Mascara

I love a good waterproof mascara. I usually stick to drug store, but I got this one to try out and I loved it. I love it so much. It meets all my needs for not smudging and keeping my lashes looking dark and full. I would buy it again in an instant.

L’Oréal Brow Stylist Definer

I got this a long time ago, and it is fantastic. I can’t believe I actually used up an entire brow product. It had a super fine tip as well as a great little brow brush. Highly recommend.

Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Body Wash

This one seems to also have a cult following. I strangely enough love the bottle; it has a great squeeze to it and a cap that lets the right amount out. The formula is gel like and lathers fantastically. I have a backup and just got the shampoo and conditioner, so I am pretty happy that I’ll get to try them out soon.

The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous cleansing Butter

This is a fantastic cleansing balm. I used all of it up, which is kind of impressive, and I have a brand-new tin to start. I genuinely love this cleansing balm, and I love a lot of cleansing balms. I also love this comes in a tin and is plastic free.

St. Ive's Energizing Body Wash - Citrus & Cherry Blossom

This was Mr. Fox's. He goes through a lot of body wash, so he used it up pretty fast. He seemed to like it ok but hasn't repurchased it. I think he got it as an attempt to find a drug store dupe for TBS Satsuma body wash. I liked the smell and saw at the drug store for $4.99 the other day, so I would consider buying it for him.

Irish Spring Moisturizing Face + Body Wash - Moisture Blast

I got sent a similar one a few years back for review, he still likes the brand and buys it a few times a year. He says it cleans well and doesn't dry him out.

Garnier Fructis - Pure Clean - Shampoo

This is a silicone free shampoo for those with normal to oily hair. Mr. Fox once again used this and not me. He didn't rebuy it, but did seem to like it

So there you go, a pile of stuff I will be recycling. If you are looking for where to recycle your empty beauty products in Canada, check out my post on the topic here.

Drier weather is definitely here, and my skin is suffering. Despite the fact that every fall the humidity and warm weather leave Toronto, I am always shocked when my skin starts to suffer as a result. This year I am using Keri Original Lotion In Fragrance Free and Shower and Bath Oil to combat the effects of the fall and winter.
As soon as my pool closes on Labour Day I become a bath person once again, and Keri Shower & Bath Oil is right along with me. Whether it is being added to my bath to make it a hydrating and relaxing soak or if applied right after I get out of the tub, it is always a fantastic experience. It has an unmistakable Keri Oil scent, which is soft, powdery and floral all at once.
My skin feels silky and smooth, soft and touchable while not overly oily, but more dewy feeling. It's a great feeling and experience.
I recently started to use Keri's Original Fragrance Free Intense Hydration body lotion and it has also been a lifesaver. When my hands and arms start to get dry, a few pumps makes them feel a lot better. Pretty much anywhere either get dry, I use it. It's not sticky or watery, rather smooth and hydrating without a tacky feeling that absorbs quickly. I usually like scented lotion, but I have really been liking this fragrance free version, it smells like absolutely nothing and doesn't conflict with other scents I am wearing.
Overall, these two products have been great additions to my body care routine. My skin is softer and less itchy. It is easy to see why both of these have been cult classics for so darn long. Keri was my grandmother's favourite brand and I have fond memories of using the bath oil as a kid. I am happy I've added them to my routine and am going to continue using them for a long time to come.

Have You Tried Any Keri Products? What Do You Think Of Them?

Holiday season is just about here and that means giving time period. I absolute adored the gift giving selection Mary Kay comes up with for the holiday season each year, these are some of my go to products for gifting and I thought I'd show you what they are offering this year
There are some new items and some returning limited edition items and some absolute favourites among it so Let's get started.

Satin Hands Peaceful Pampering Set Citrus Rose $55.00
Mary Kay's Satin Hands set is a must have for me, I haven't been without one in probably a decade. This holiday season their Citrus Rose scent is back for limited time. The limited edition set has 3 steps, Protecting Softener, Refining Scrub, and Nourishing Shea Cream as well as cotton gloves. While I love the Citrus Rose scent, the set is also available during the holiday season in White Citrus and Fragrance-Free.
Mint Bliss Energizing Lotion for Feet & Legs & Holiday Socks /3 fl. oz. / $16.00
After my hands, my feet are my most important thing for me to take care of in the winter, Mary Kay's Mint Bliss lotion is just great for them. I've been using it since last holiday season and it leaves my feet so soft. It is a light but nourishing lotion that has a light minty scent that feels and smells amazing. This holiday season they've bundled up with a free cozy pair socks. I like to lotion up my feet and legs right  before putting them on, in the morning my feet feel so much softer.
Silkening Dry Oil 5 FL. OZ. / 147 ml $24.00
This is a limited edition body oil that helps keep the body smooth and soft while being lightweight. It has a scent that they are calling Peaceful Garden.
Top Notes: Fresh Cut Stems, Bergamot, Cilantro, Muddled Spearmint
Middle Notes: Peony, White Tea, Violet Leaves, Water Lily
Bottom Notes: White Woods, Oak Moss, Musk
I really like this scent, it plays well on my skin. In addition to that I really love how the oil feels on my skin post shower or bath. It is just so soft and lightweight, all the while being hydrating.
Masking Minis / 1.2 oz each  / $20.00
Pampering yourself or others during the cold holiday season is a must, it just is so hard on our skin. Mary Kay has you or you loved ones covered with their Masking Minis, its a duo of two of their most popular face masks. TimeWise Moisture Renewing Gel Mask is a mega hydrating mask that helps soothe dry and chap skin.. ClearProof Deep-Cleansing Charcoal Mask deep cleans skin and reduces shine and has a gentle cooling sensation (it's the rosemary and peppermint in it). This limited edition set is great because you could break it up and give it as two gifts of give it all at once to someone, or like me keep it for yourself.
Men's Hair and Body Wash Gift Set $30.00
One of my favourite items for holidays past from Mary Kay was this set. It has two fantastic men's Hair and Body washes that my hubby really loved, True Original and MK High Intensity Ocean
Shower all the guys on your list with this scent-worthy set of multitasking hair and body washes and a little mesh drawstring bag.

Both body wash scents aren't available outside this collection, so it is the only time to grab them.

Speaking of great gifts for men, this limited edition trio of scents makes for a perfect gift. You get CityScape Cologne Spray, MK High intensity Cologne Spray and MK High Intensity Sport Cologne Spray. Currently this is the only way you can get MK High Intensity in any format.

I personally think it is the perfect gift for any family member who likes these kinds of scents, last year I gave it to a friend and he really liked them all.

I'm very much in love with these lippies, they are just so darn pretty!!! I also love them as stocking stuffers, you can toss one into a stocking or wrap a pack up as a gift.
Highlight Brush & Contour Sponge Set $18.00
This is a cute little brush and sponge set, the perfect gift for any makeup lover in your life. The set has a mini Highlight Brush, brush guard and mini Contour Sponge. My one niece is just getting into makeup for fun, and I totally remember that stage of my life, I think of how cool it would have been to have gotten brushes like this at that age. I also just adore Mary Kay's brushes, they are some of my favourites to use.
So there you go, all the limited edition products that Mary Kay has available this holiday season. I personally love all of them and think they would make great gifts.

Summer is well on its way, and my condo's pool has been open for a month now. It had a rocky start this year with a broken heater for over a week. As soon as it all got sorted out, I started to swim every day. I have only missed 4 days and that was due to weather or me feeling a little sick.

Since I am swimming every day, my skin and hair routine is totally different and I though I would share all the things I am doing differently and why I am loving the items. So with that...here is what I am loving right now, post swimming of course.

Hair:
L'oreal Pari Hair Expertise Dream Lengths More Than Shampoo / 200ml / $9.99
A few months back Tori from Doll and Dye mentioned this on her Instagram. It is a thick conditioner like product that has a low lather and helps cleanse your hair while conditioning it. Think of it like a two in one or a cleansing condition, either way it works great to get my hair clean post chlorine exposure without stripping it dry.

I actually went though a whole bottle of the Extraordinary Oil version before popping open this one, and my hair really loved it.

L'oreal Paris Dream Lengths No Haircut Cream / 200ml / $9.99
This one is new to me, but the more I use it the more I like it. It is a leave in conditioner. It makes a bunch of claims regarding split ends, but I wanted something to hold moisture in my hair and help protect it from further damage. So far it is doing a great job and I would definitely buy it again.
L'oreal Paris Dream Lengths Wonder Water / 200ml / $9.99
Since early 2020 I pretty much haven't shut up about Wonder Water. It is fantastic! I happened to buy the Dream Lengths version last time it was on sale. It really helps make my hair feel stronger but also stronger after each use. I am currently using it about twice a week.
The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + Hyaluronic Acid Scalp Serum / 60ml / $14.00
My scalp gets a bit dry from time to time and washing it everyday is making that happen more often. This serum is pretty good at calming my scalp. I usually put two droppers worth into my hair at night after I shower. If I don't I may wake up with a slightly dry scalp feel and apply it when I wake up.

Invisibobble Extra Hold Hair Ring, The Secret Purple / 2 pack / $15.00*
I have to tie my hair back or I just have the worst time at the pool. Normal elastics kind of suck at the pool because they absorb water and can rip my hair out when removing in the shower. Invisibooble are great because they don't absorb any water and hold tight. This model is even better because it is doubled up with two boobles together for extra hold.

Face & Body:
Yardley English Lavender Luxury Body Wash / 250ml/ $12.99*
My whole goal post swimming in the shower is to rinse all the chlorine, spf and whatever I got covered in that day off and try not to dry my skin out. This body wash dose that quickly and nicely, my skin always feels great after. Best part is the nice lavender scent gets me ready for bed time.

I have already used one up, as you can see by this bottle with one use left.

Mary Kay Shower Gel Berry & Vanilla / 200ml / 18.00*
When I do swim during the day I like this body wash. It has a fresh fruity scent that I really like while being easy to lather and rise.

Grown Alchemist : Gentle Gel Facial Cleanser / 200ml / $52
I got this last summer from Influenster to review, and I liked it for use in the shower, the pump really adds to that too. I decided to start using it again this year and have been really liking it to rise off everything from my day including the pool chlorine and spf. It can leave my skin feeling a little tight so I only use it on really sweaty days. It is just ok for makeup, so precleanse if wearing any.
Burt's Bees Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin / 170g / $14.99*
I recently got sent this to review so I tossed it into my shower to use. It is creamy and lathers great. It does a great job of removing my day. It is no nice on my skin and hasn't dried it out once. That being said, you should precleanse if wearing any waterproof makeup.

Keri Moisturizing Shower & Bath Oil / 450ml / $10.99
The classic OG bath oil. Once a week I am still taking a bath and when I do I give it a big squirt of this stuff. It makes my bath oily but also leaves my skin so soft and coated in oil after. Did I mention it is made in Canada?!!!

Evereden Golden Body Serum / 100ml / $52.00

I was sent this to review a month ago from Influsneter. I loved it right away. It smells amazing, it has a nice thickness to it and makes my skin feel so soft. It is a game changing oil for my body, it leaves my skin feeling amazing for hours and when I don't use it my skin feels dry and tight, making me want to use it even more. It is best applied right after the shower when you are still a bit damp.

Ok so there you go, what I am using everyday after I swim. My hair hasn't gotten fried, which I was really afraid of since I did some damage earlier in the year. My skin is staying soft and hydrated too. I am super happy so far and am going to keep on using everything until the season ends on Labour day.

Are you doing any fun summer activity?
