Beauty Vixen

This is part two of my Vintage Vanity series, I am continuing with the exploration of bars of soap that have stood the test of time. Today I am looking at the British favourite, Pears transparent soap.
History:
Pears was first made in 1807, in all its transparent amber oval bar glory. This British gem is known for having royal warrants leading back to Queen Victoria.

The bar has gone through some changes over the last 200+ years, mainly in 2009 and again for a relaunch in 2016. People really didn’t like the 2009 change, and made a Facebook petition, it lost its Royal Warrant and disappeared for quite a few years as a result. In 2016 it relaunched and tried to win back its old fans. It sounds like it is much better than the 2009 version, but not as good as the original.
The bars were first sold in London in 1807, its transparent colour was due to it being a glycerine-based soap, but was also a big part of its marking, promoting how ‘pure’ it was.

Things that make this bar unique are, a divot in the top, which is due to shrinkage as it sets (not moulding), but people love to smush their old bars into it, preventing waste. It is also clear, which at the time of release, was neat. It has a unique scent that is supposed to be that of an English Garden.
Review:
I immediately did not like the scent of this soap when I opened the box. It was overwhelming and unpleasant to me. I am used to a whole bunch of different types of scents, this was not one I had smelled before. After a few days of the bar in my shower, I either got used to it, or the unboxing potency faded and it was a lot better.

When I used it, I instantly felt a film on my body that I did not like. I did not find it rinsed off well unless I used a body wash mixed with it or afterwards. It wasn't the worst soap film, but not a great feeling.

It did do an excellent job cleaning like all soaps should. I did not smell bad after using it and the bar's scent did not linger.
Pros:

  • Cheap, at 3 75 g bars for under $4.00 CAD
  • Easy to find, can find it at dollar stores, grocery stores, and drug stores easily.
  • Cleans well, and removes odour easily.
  • Lathered well.
Cons:
  • I do not like the scent of this soap.
  • Residue feeling after using.
  • The scent did not linger.
  • Soap is wrapped in plastic, so not plastic-free.
Overall:
I did not like this soap. I can see why people got mad about the changes in it. It did not smell good, it did not feel good. I would not recommend it unless you could not find another bar to use.

Yes, summer is over, but it was 24 degrees out the other day. It is so warm and sunny it feels like late Summer. With that, I thought it would be a great time to talk about the 5 things I have liked the most this past summer.

The products are going to be hanging out with my Feather Friends from the summer collection. I do not know how I became a person who fell in love with decorative birds, but here I am ordering ones for the holiday season.
Biore UV Aqua Rich 50 SPF
I got a four-pack of these at Costco in the spring. I really enjoyed it. It is one of the few sunscreens that does not burn my eyes, which is a big deal in the hot summer months.

I did a full review here if you want to read it. They did a very good job of adapting the Japanese formula for the Canadian market, considering we do not allow all the ingredients here (which I really hope they update soon).
Dr. Scholl’s® Ultra Exfoliating Foot Mask *
I used this in the early summer to prepare my feet for sandal season, and it worked great. I had thick and flaky skin on my feet and didn't want to get a pedicure. I used it again after my pool closed. I tend to kick off the rough walls of the pool and get cuts, so I had to wait until after they healed to use it again.
I did a full review here. I love the multi-pack, which means I don't have to worry about picking up more and how well it just works. I also like that there is a lotion version, so I can keep the smooth feeling going as long as possible. Their Ultra-Hydrating Food Mask is also fantastic.
Pixi On-The-Glow Blush/Bronzer
I picked these up when I did a Shoppers Drug Mart order and have loved using them. Everyone talked so much about how great they were, and I now see why. I really liked using them in the hotter months for a glowy blush look. Really nice formula.
Joico Air Dry Styling Cream
Since I swam from Canada Day to Labour Day pretty much daily, I did not want to damage my hair more by styling it with heat. I ended up using this no-heat styling cream instead and let my hair air dry. I do really enjoy how my wavy hair decides how straight or curly it wants to be every time I wash it, this product helps it do that without weighing it down while preventing frizz.
Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Crush / Trader Joe's Brazil Nut Butter Products
Ok, I know it is not a single product...but hear me out. I went to Trader Joe's in June after a concert at Fallsview. I picked up the three Brazilian Nut Butter items they sell, Body Butter, Body Scrub and Body Wash (they all cost $5.99 USD). They are apparently a dupe of the Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Crush scent. Since I have two minis of the Sol de Janeiro body spray, I figured I would focus on trying to use one up.
Since they all go so well together (I do not think the TJ is a dupe of the scent; the TJ smells a bit different), I just started using all 4 products daily. As a result, I used up a mini body spray by the end of September. Mission accomplished for intentionally using up a product.
So there you go, those are some of the things I really enjoyed this past season. I am actually looking forward to some fall weather in the next few weeks. The trees are now a great shade and I always enjoy walks with Bradley when we aren't going to pass out from the heat.

What have you been loving lately?

Burt's Bees has been a favourite brand of mine for quite a long time now. In recent years they're expanded their lines in skin care and cosmetics with a naturally sourced focus. I was fortunate enough to get sent some of their newer skin care products last summer and thought I would finally share my thoughts on them with you. The main focus on these products is hydration, which honestly is something I am constantly struggling with due to my dry and dehydrated skin. Let's take a look shall we.
Burt’s Bees Sensitive Hydrating Gentle Daily Face Cream Moisturizer
water, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, glycerin, cetyl alcohol, CI 77947 (zinc oxide), zea mays (corn) starch, gossypium herbaceum (cotton) flower extract, oryza sativa (rice) extract, beta vulgaris (beet) root extract, artemisia umbelliformis extract, euphrasia officinalis extract, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, saccharum officinarum (sugar cane) extract, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, jojoba esters, hydrolyzed jojoba esters, kaolin, lecithin, sucrose, fructose, glucose, inositol, citric acid, benzoic acid, trehalose, xanthan gum, glyceryl laurate, potassium sorbate, sucrose stearate, sucrose polystearate, sodium benzoate, sodium stearoyl lactylate, sodium PCA, alcohol denat., phenoxyethanol.
This is a revamp of a previous daily lotion, it now is 98.9% naturally derived, fragrance free and has ingredients like Rice Extracts and Aloe to calm and soothe sensitive skin. It even has the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance.

I personally have always had sensitive and reactive skin so this all sounded too good to be true, but the truth is it really has been a calming step in my morning routine. My skin generally reacts really will to rice extract products and aloe (I've never been without an aloe plant my whole life).

I usually use 1 to 1.5 pumps after applying a serum and it blends in easily without much hassle and leaves my face feeling hydrated. It has a nice texture, it isn't sticky and my skin seems to really like it. It is definitely a product I would pick up when I run out.
Burt’s Bees Sensitive Facial Cream Cleanser With Aloe
water, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, glycerin, cetyl alcohol, beeswax, sucrose stearate, cetearyl alcohol, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, gossypium herbaceum (cotton) flower extract, oryza sativa (rice) extract, beta vulgaris (beet) root extract, quillaja saponaria bark extract, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, yucca schidigera leaf/root/stem extract, artemisia umbelliformis extract, euphrasia officinalis extract, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) water, saccharum officinarum (sugar cane) extract, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, silica, sucrose, fructose, glucose, coco-glucoside, inositol maltodextrin, citric acid, benzoic acid, trehalose, xanthan gum, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, CI 77947 (zinc oxide), alcohol denat., phenoxyethanol.
This is a creamy, non-foaming cleanser. It only takes a bit to clean your whole face, but it does a good job for a cream cleanser and it rinses well. I actually keep mine in the shower and use it in the mornings or after swimming. It makes for a great first cleanse in a two part cleansing program or when you are not wearing makeup. I generally wear waterproof makeup, and for that it isn't the best.

It has The Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance, is soap free and has ingredients like Cotton and Rice Extracts to moisturize and soothe skin.
Burt's Bees Hydrating Facial Cleanser Towelettes and Makeup Remover Wipes for All Skin Types with Watermelon
water, glycerin, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, phenoxyethanol, polyglyceryl-4 caprate, sodium benzoate, fragrance*, disodium cocoyl glutamate, citric acid, potassium sorbate, tocopherol, sodium cocoyl glutamate, citrullus lanatus (watermelon) seed extract, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, geraniol, limonene *natural fragrance
These wipes are made with at least 60% repurposed cotton. I's leftover from making t-shirts, which I understand the scraps from textile cutting make up a huge part of fashion waste, but we just don't hear about it as much (picture all those scraps they cut off for every item being tossed). Beyond that, they contain Aloe, Watermelon seed extract, and sunflower seed oil.

I have been seriously curbing my use of wipes, but these ones sounded much more environmental but also like they would work really well, and they do! I mainly wear waterproof makeup and wipes usually don't do a great job of removing it, but these do a really good job. I've used them at work when I've needed to just take everything off (sometimes my makeup gets in my eyes and the only thing to do is take it all off). They are both really effective and convenient.
Burt's Bees 100% Natural Origin Squeezy Tinted Lip Balm
ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, vegetable oil, lanolin, beeswax, flavour*, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, glyceryl behenate, zea mays (corn) starch, tocopherol, rebaudioside A, glycine soja (soybean) oil, canola oil, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, alumina, limonene. May contain: titanium dioxide, carmine, iron oxides. *natural flavour. Formulated without Parabens, Phthalates, Petrolatum or SLS. Made in USA of global ingredients
This is a tinted lip balm, but in a tube, which honestly I have never seen before. It is 100% natural in origin and comes in a plastic squeeze tube that looks metallic. I have it in the shade/scent Summer Mellon. It squeezes out of a flat tube top (so you need to use your finger to apply) in a redy-pink tone. It smells just like melons. There are three other shade/scent choices and some have shimmer in the, but this one does not.

The balm is smooth and slippery on the lips. It stays put for a long time and the balm is actually quite pigmented while still letting your own lip shade shine through.
Burt's Bees 100% Natural Origin Moisturizing Lip Balm, Tropical Pineapple with Beeswax
Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, beeswax, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, flavour*, lanolin, ananas sativus (pineapple) fruit extract, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, carthamus tinctorius (safflower) seed oil, glycine, soja (soybean) oil, tocopherol, rebaudioside A, amyl cinnamal, limonene, linalool. *natural flavour
I think we all know Burt's Bees is known for its lip balms, it is their go to for a lot of people and there is a good reason, they are really good at what they do. This baby here is a new flavour, Pineapple. I love pineapples so I am all about that. It happens to also have Shea Butter, Vitamin E and Coconut Oil, it is hydrating and soothing for dry lips.
I have definitely been using this one a lot lately, the warmer weather gets me craving things like pineapple and coconut, and the scent/taste just brings that tropical feeling.
Burt's Bees 100% Natural Origin Advanced Relief Lip Balm with Beeswax and Antioxidant-Rich Elderberry Clear
Beeswax, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, mango butter dimer dilinoleyl esters/dimer dilinoleate copolymer, hydrogenated castor oil, flavour*, vegetable oil, crambe abyssinica seed oil, theobroma grandiflorum seed butter, lauryl laurate, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, carthamus tinctorius (safflower) seed oil, copernicia cerifera (carnauba) wax, sambucus nigra flower extract, sambucus nigra fruit extract, tetrahydrodiferuloylmethane, polyglyceryl-10 diisostearate, tocopherol, glycine soja (soybean) oil, rebaudioside A, alumina, carmine, titanium dioxide, iron oxides. *Natural flavour. Formulated without Parabens, Phthalates, Petrolatum or SLS. Made in USA of global ingredients.
If you suffer from chronically dry chap lips (this is me all fall, winter and spring btw), This may be the lip balm for you. Loaded with antioxidants like Elderberry and hydrators like Jojoba Oil and Cocao Seed Butter, it is meant for lips that are in bad shape.
There is very little scent to this balm, so it isn't one of their tasty balms, but it is meant to be restorative for your lips. The formula is stiffer and a bit more waxy then some of the other, but it coats your lips real nice. I experience a minor amount of tingling, not menthol feeling or anything like that, just a mild feeling.
Burt's Bees The Luminizer Nourishing Highlighter, Star Light or Golden Hour
Aqua [water], dicaprylyl carbonate, mica, coco-caprylate/caprate, polyglyceryl-4 diisostearate/polyhydroxystearate/sebacate, glycerin, caprylic/capric triglyceride, lauroyl lysine, sodium chloride, nelumbo nucifera extract, camellia sinensis leaf extract, tocopherol, ascorbic acid, hydrogenated castor oil, sodium phytate, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate
These are some stunning liquid highlighters or luminizers that are 98.8% natural in origin. They are loaded with good for you things like Green Tea Complex, Vitamins and Antioxidants.

These luminizers come in two shades, Golden Hour, a golden toned shade and Star Light, a pinky-silver shade. The tubes have a pointed tip so you don't squeeze too much out.
The formula is meant to be applied alone or with makeup as a highlighter or mixed with moisturizer as an all over luminator. I personally like to dab small amounts and use it as a highlighter.

Very little is needed to get a strong shimmery result, I very much like them and how they can boost your look with a pretty glow.
Burt's Bees Gloss and Glow Glossy Balm, Winning in Pink, Wine Wednesday,
Cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, mango butter dimer dilinoleyl esters/ dimer dilinoleate copolymer, cera alba [beeswax], glycerin, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed wax, polyhydroxystearic acid, stearyl behenate, polyglyceryl-6 polyhydroxystearate, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, polyglyceryl-6 polyricinoleate, silica, aroma [flavour]*, polyglycerin-6, tocopherol, glycine soja (soybean) oil, ascorbyl palmitate, limonene, linalool, May contain [+/-]: CI 75470 [carmine], CI 77891 [titanium dioxide], CI 77491CI 77499CI 77492 [iron oxides] *arme naturel/natural flavour
These are tinted lip balms with mango butter and coconut oil and olive oil in them to help boost hydration the lips. They are light scented with a floral scent and are 100% natural in origin.
They come in slim plastic tubes that are made of 17% post consumed plastic.
There are four shades, I have three of them, Winning in Pink, Eat, Drink & Be Cherry and Wine Wednesday.
Wine Wednesday is a dark pink-wine shade.
Eat, Drink & Be Cherry is a deep pink-cherry red. Finally Winning in Pink is pretty much colourless on the skin but has a shimmer in it.
All of them pack more colour punch the more you apply but never get too deep. They give me Clinique Almost Lipstick vibes in the way they are coloured, look dark in the tube, but go on lighter and let your lips own shade still shine through. They glide on the lips and feel super slippery on. Absolutely fabulous product.

Overall, I am very impressed with these items. I love the skin care and would easily purchase any of those items once I run out. The lotion and cleanser have become a daily staples. The Gloss & Glows and Squeezy are fabulous to add a pop of colour while helping my lips stay their healthiest. The lip balks are great across the board. Finally the luminators are a great way to ad some glow to your skin. I really love them all and have really enjoyed using them on a regular bases.

Did you know Burt's Bees has a recycling program? It is true, Terracycle and Burt's Bees are working together to get all their packaging recycled. Just save up a bunch of their empties and fill out a form over here and you will get a prepaid shipping label to get the items sent off to be recycled. It includes pretty much all of their containers so it is a great way to help keep plastics out of the landfills and waterways.

You can pick up Burt's Bees products at your local drug store, mass retailer, grocery store or amazon.ca

There are five different shades in the limited edition, Must-Have Mauve, Classic Red, Burgundy Orchid, Rich Espresso and Modern Nude.
Classic Red and absolutely stunning red that suits it name perfectly. Must-Have Mauve is incredibly wearable and my favourite shade overall. Burgundy Orchid is rich and deep but still really wearable. Rich Espresso is a little dark for my taste and can go on a bit patchy if you over do it, but it still is really nice. Modern Nude is my second favourite and really flattering.

These are absolutely amazing creams that can be used on your lips or cheeks. They are creamy and smooth and blend into your skin or lips with such easy. They easily fit into existing Mary Kay palettes as they are the same size as their other blushes and highlighters.
Here the four blushes are in my MK palette, they are the four on the right.
Top left: Spiced Berry, top right: Luxe Lilac,
bottom left: Mauve Sunset and bottom right: Peach Shimmer.
They come in four colours, Peach Shimmer, Mauve Sunset, Luxe Lilac and Spiced Berry. With the exception of Peach Shimmer, all the shades are cream without any glitter in them. They all look really bold in the pans, but can be blended out to be light.
I fell in love with them, and love how easy it is to apply some to my cheeks and lips in just put mascara on and call it a day for my makeup. It's great for this time of year when it is so hot and I don't want to wear anything powdery.

May Kay is always knocking it out of the park when it comes to limited edition lip balms or hand creams. They smell fantastic and always feel great. This time around they have a great duo of squeezable lip balms in fruity flavours. Tropical Guava and Sweet Berry. They're both very summery.
These balms are smooth, silky  and soft on the lips. Not too thick and definitely not goopy.
So  there you go, some new, limited edition items from Mary Kay to brighten up your summer. Overall I am really impressed with everything. I really adore the liquid lipsticks formula (and am activly wishing they add them to the MK permanent line up, and with more shades), the cream lip and check blushes are blendable and very pretty. Lip balms are smooth and silky while being very hydrating. The brush and brush cleaning pads are both of excellent quality and work really well while giving money to a worthy cause. Belif is a brand I have talked about before, and while I really enjoyed everything I have ever tried from them, I still feel like I barely know the brand. Which Is why when I was given the opportunity to try out their Aqua Bomb Brightening Vitamin C Cream I jumped at it.

This cream contains four different types of of hyaluronic acids to help hydrate the skin for a long period of time. It also has Vitamins C and E to help brighten the skin.
Since I started using the cream a month ago I feel like my skin has become softer and smoother. It also is in fact brighter! I find that my skin can often be super sensitive, but it really loves this formula and reacts very well to it.

It feels a lot like their Original Aqua Bomb Cream, but has this wonderful citrus scent that is light and lovely. It applies light airy like a gel-cream meant for more oily skin, but really hydrates and soothes the skin. It keeps my skin hydrated for a long period of time like a heavier cream would. The best part of this combo is in the warmer months I get hydration I need without sweating it out as the day goes on or as I sleep.
Overall I really like this new formulation. I really like the OG Aqua Bomb (and the True Cream), I mean I really do, but this is an upgrade for me. I hydrates my skin super well and for the whole day, all while being a gel like texture that is light and absorbs almost instantly. It really is great combo for my dry skin in the warmer weather. The added vitamins are also fantastic and I find my marks have been clearing up quicker since I've been using it. It's a new staple to my routine and I will put it on my list for the next Sephora sale.

You can purchase belif products at Sephora.ca and Sephora stores across Canada
