Beauty Vixen

Acure is one of the top names in natural skin care, while I have tried a few of their items over the years and had great results from them, I have fallen  completely head over heals in love with these Argan based products.

Brightening Facial Scrub (118 ml, 4 fl. oz)
This scrub features Argan extract and Chlorella Growth Factor (which comes from the stems of the chlorella plant) to help brighten and hydrate the skin and French green clay to purify, lemon peel granules to exfoliate and scrub the skin and Madonna lily extract for evening out skin pigmentation. It is also is packed with anti oxidants like Acai fruit extract and Blackberry extract, just to name a few.

This scrub goes on pretty darn green (that's the Chlorella growth factor in it) and feels nicely gritty (not too much or too little) that I can get a good scrubbing on my face without irritating or overdoing it. It rinses nicely too without leaving your face green.

Whenever I have used this scrub I have followed it up with the Brightening Mask, but I have loved how smooth my skin feels after using it.

Sometimes when I use a scrub I feel irritated and red despite my attempts not to scrub too hard. I believe so many scrubs have just too harsh and jagged granuals in it, but this Brightening scrub is just amazing in how it scuffs off my dead skin while not irritating it at all, it actually feels nicely soothed when I am done using it.

Brightening Face Mask (50ml, 1.75 oz.)
This mask partners up amazingly well with the Brightening Facial Scrub (they are in the same line), it features many of the same ingredients, Argan, Chlorealla, French green Clay, CoQ10, and many others.

Like the Scrub, this baby leaves your face green, but even more so, which is both fun and a great bench mark to see if you have used enough. I do find I need a lot of this to get a good cover on my face and the tube is about 60% smaller then the scrub (which you need very little of), so I would love to see a bigger tube of it down the line. That being said I adore how soft and smooth my skin is every single time I use it. It isn't red and inflamed, it isn't dry and tight, both things that can easily happen with my skin when I use anything with clay or mud in it. It is just soft and glowy.
Moroccan Argan Oil (30 ml, 1 fl. oz.)
Argan Oil is one of those things that I people usually associate with hair care and not skin care. I personally have been using Argan oil for my skin for years, but find most that are out their very heavy. Acure Argan Oil is much lighter and as a result works amazingly well on my dry skin as well as my hair and body.

What I love about an oil like this is that you can use it as a serum, mix it in with other lotions or creams to make them more hydrating in colder months but you can also use it on your body, hands and hair. Since it is such a multi purpose product it makes for a great travel buddy too. I also really enjoy that this one comes in a pump and not an eyedropper bottle, it makes for a much cleaner application and less chance of contaminating the inside of the bottle (or spilling, I usually spill things).

My personal favourite way to use this is as a thin layer after my serum but before my lotions to my face, or adding a few drops to my favourite sleep mask to give it more of a boost when my skin is more dry. Although I do have many other ways I like to incorporate it into my daily routine.
Overall these three products have been very good to my sensitive and reactive skin. The scrub gently buffs away my dead skin, the mask hydrates while purifying my skin and the oil is a true multi-tasker that helps keep my skin hydrated pretty much head to toe.  I love the Acure brand, it isn't just an organic brand it is a plant bases, vegan, sulfate free, paraben free, and cruelty free brand, which is just fantastic for anyone looking for the best in natural skin care.

A few weeks back I got the privilege to attend an event at Pure + Simple, in their Yorkville location. In addition to having their own fantastic Canadian made and natural house brand, Pure + Simple sells a full line up of other Canadian Natural brands in their spas.
Not only did I get to learn about the brands, I got to meet the owners and reps from the brands and try out lots of great products.

Healing Haus
Healing Haus' line of products are 100% Canadian (headquartered out of Guelph, Ontario) and are formulated for their maximum potency and effectiveness by Cheryl Karthaus, who not only is the brands founder but also a Naturopath.

With seven formulas the line it features some pretty impressive lotions for the body that feature minimal ingredients for maximum impact. If you have eczema the Skin Soother is probably meant for you, Skin 101 is formulated for those who are reactive to even the lightest of essential oils, while Rest and Repair is for those with cracked and raw skin. If you have have skin there is a formula that you will probably like. I am in love with Refresh which is a Citrus and Bergamot lotion. Meant to sooth the mind and the body this lotion smells fantastic and is quite the stress relief in a jar.

Skin Essence Organics
Skin Essence Organics is a brand that makes products that are organic with freshly sourced extracts and is eco friendly. What makes this line so unique is that there is no water in the products so that they are at their most potent and without fillers. The Facial in a Jar is a powder that you mix to create a potent face mask that delivers in its results.

FitGlow Beauty
FitGlow Beauty is a line of skin care and beauty line that is packed full of active vitamins, humectants and plant sterols. Ingredents like Kojc Acid, wildcrafted Ginseng, Willow Bark and MSN are in their Renew Serum and provide a lot goodness to your skin. Their lip glosses contain Organic Coconut oil, Shea Butter and Jojoba while being 90% certified organic.

World
World is a hair care line that Brian Phillips came up with after developing a sever case of contact dermatitis on his hands. He was advised by a client who happened to be a naturopath told him it was a reaction to something he used regularly. Soon it was revealed to be products he used in his salon were the culprit to his skin ailment. Brian was inspired to create products he could use daily on his clients that wouldn't cause either of them damage.
World is a line of skin and hair care products that contain no parabens, phthalates, sulphates, fragrances or colours while being fully biodegradable and vegan (two products do contain beeswax though).

As someone who bathes dogs on a daily bases, I can fully understand and relate to both Brian's story and the line of products. I also have highly reative skin to fragrances when my skin gets chapped (which is often) so this line really impresses me. I mean Protect is a hair and body moisturizer, what a great idea.

Da lish
Da lish is a cosmetics line that  Toronto native Melanie Cruickshank started when she decided she had to know the ingredients in her makeup. Her friends started wanting it, and complements started rolling in, and Dalish was born. Loaded with anti-oxidants, Shea Butter, Sunflower seed oil and Rosemary leaf extract this makeup line is good for you and looks fantastic.

NuVsio
NuVsio was created by Dr. Brei, who was looking for more effective and natural skin care products. Their focus is on purity though nature and efficiency through science. Pure organic ingredients that do their jobs well and no chemicals, this line is as scientific as a natural brand can be. Their formulas are based on minerals, their science and skin therapy based them.

Sattva Pure
Sattva is a line of natural skin care that only uses the finest quality ingredients and is manufactured in Aurora, Ontario. Natural oils, botanicals, and vitamins are the stars of this product line that is focused on helping skin be at its best without irritation on even the most sensitive of skin. It is also 100% vegan, free of parabens, petrochemicals, phthalates, sls, sles, synthetic colours and synthetic fragrances. It also happens to use organic and fair-trade ingredients in many of its formulations.

Healthy Crunch
Healthy Crunch was also there, they make delicious Kale snack with whole leaf kale, not just little bits and crumbs like other brands. They also make some pretty fantastic flavour options, like Say Cheese! a zesty cheese option that uses nutritional yeast instead of dairy. They also make sprinkles (they call them Krumps), which you can use to top just about anything you like (soup, salad, you name it).  Yum-yum. I'd like to note my mother-in-law gobbled these down so fast, she has a health condition which requires lots of vitamin k, kale is super high in vitamin k...so they went fast.

These Canadian Natural brands can all be found at Pure + Simple locations.

I look forward to trying a few products from some of these brands out in the next little while.
Have you tried any of these brands? What do you love about them?

A little while back I was sent some goodies from the natural brand Surya Brasil.  With the World Cup on and all the worlds eyes on Brazil I thought what better time then now to talk about it.
Founded in 1995, this brand stands natural beauty in the best way possible, and they are not afraid to back it up with third party certifications (and man they have a lot of them, PETA, ECOCERT, Vegan.org, transfairusa.org, and many more).
Below is a list of all the things you won't find in their products:
  • NO sulfates
  • NO parabens
  • NO BHT
  • NO EDTA
  • NO synthetic fragrance
  • NO mineral oil
  • NO GMOs
  • NO phthalates
  • NO alcohol
  • NO silicon
Sapien Women is their latest collection which all features the same scent which is slightly fruity and slightly nutty.
Sapien Women Body Moisturizer - This is a light and creamy moisturizer that is fantastic for me in the warmer weather. With Capuaçu and murmur butters in it your skin feels nourished but not heavy. No greasy or heaviness to it at all. Just a light refreshing moisturizer, perfect for those who love lotions and not creams.
Sapien Women Shower Gel - This shower gel is sulphate free and contains aloe vera and vitamin E. It lathers extremely well and cleans just as well. My skin feels soft and clean, not stripped and dry after using it.
Sapien Women Body Scrub - Filled with natural exfoliants from coconut bark and organic buriti. It is a creamy exfoliant that works well at making my skin feel fresh and smooth without being wrought. I personally like applying to my dry skin before getting into the shower for a better scuffing experience.
Sapien Women Facial Scrub - This scrub is made with the same coconut bark and organic buriti to help remove dry skin and impurities, yet it is soft and gentle enough for your face.
Shave Gel - This is a gel that is fantastic for shaving just about anywhere a woman needs to! With no alcohol or sulphates it makes a fantastic foam substitute. Aloe vera and vegetable glycerin helps keep your skin moisturized and stops the gel from drying on your legs/arms/bikini area while you shave.

Now I was also sent some hair, face and body products from their other lines.
Amazônia Perciosa Revitalizing Hair Mask - This mask is meant for normal and straight hair and is loaded with goodies like cupuaću butter and lots of vitamins. What is doesn't have is silicones. It is thick and fellss fantastic going on the hair. I guess I am just so used to silicones in my hair masks that this just feels not too great when I am done. I've tried it several times and while I am not blown away with it, I do like to add it to other hair masks to boost them and give them more effect…and when I do that I love the results. On its own….not so much.
Color Fixation Conditioner - This conditioner is intended for colour treated hair, hey I have colour treated hair. Made with moisturizing botanical ingredients to restore brilliance and vitality to damaged and colored hair. So what did I think? meh. Once again silicones are definitely what makes conditioners make your hair feel smooth and silky, without them I just don't feel that same level of satisfaction when conditioning. I guess I am just not truly a natural girl when it comes to hair care.
Amazônia Perciosa Hand And Body Lotion - This lotion is slightly thinner than the Sapien Women line but smells fantastic. Made with macadamia seed oil, uccuba nut butter and cupuacu butter it is intense in what it does deliver and how well it does it.
Lip Balms - If you're a strict vegan you probably find it hard to find a good lip balm that is really vegan (no bees wax) and maybe you want no parabens and no paraffin wax…well this might just be the lip balm for you. I personally love the cinnamon version and the mint chocolate (I'm a mint chocolate fiend).
Oveall I really like Surya Brasil, they are eco conscious, fair trade, and animal friendly, plus they back them selves up. While their hair care didn't wow me I am sure those who are looking for silicone free products actually will.

Can can pick up Suray Brasil at Whole Foods, Well.ca and many other great health food stores across Canada. They have a store locator on their site (link here)

Recently I had the pleasure of receiving a fantastic organic facial by Naomi at In The Buff Spa (located within Blush Pretty).

I went with my friend and fellow beauty blogger Melissa (blog seen here) so most of my photos are of her facial (and most of hers are of mine, seen her post here).
me getting my facial
In The Buff uses Ilike Organic Skin Care products which are  organic...and they smell incredible. As if smelling great and being organic wasn't enough to sell me on the line they are incredible effect at what they do.
Naomi was only to helpful to answer my thousands of skin care questions and concerns. Most importantly she listened to me and my needs and customized my treatment accordingly.

My Customized Treatment was a Oxygenating and Lightening Treatment. This is ideal for all skin types, especially those with hyperpigmentation, chloasma, age spots or acne scarring. This facial treatment helps to reduce pigment blotches, freckles and acne scars. Below are the products used:
Photos of Melissa getting her facial
  • Rose petal milk cleanser (for dry skin)
  • Nettle and Algae Exfoliating wash
  • Yogurt power peel
  • Rose petal toner
  • Cucumber & Parsley oxygen treatment mixed with the activating talc
  • Hungarian Paprika gel treatment layered on the mask
  • Rich Carrot mask to soothe and bring down the redness from the paprika gel; also used for extra hydration
  • Fenugreek gel for wrinkles
  • Age defence bioflavonoid eye cream
  • Q10 oil (under the mask)
  • Brightening serum
  • Stonecrop whipped moisturizer
Wow,  that a lot of good for my skin stuff. I really appreciate how she modified it just for me.

Overall my experience was fantastic, I got a customized facial that left my skin feeling fantastic.I felt all my needs were met (dehydrated skin, need for a good exfoliation, dealing with my now 30's skin hyper-pigmintation and intense moisturization) I must say this probably was the best facial I ever received.

Naomi truly loves what she does, and it shows when she gives you a treatment and advice which might be the key to it being the best facial ever.
