Beauty Vixen

For almost 2 years now I haven't used shampoo. Instead I've been using conditioner to wash my hair with.

I ditched shampoo because I thought the idea was ingenious and had to try and my hair was in awful awful shape despite rarely washing it and never using hot tool on it.

I've gone through a few brands in the last while, some work better than others for me, and I would guess it would be the same for others.

Personally my favourite conditioners have always been hair masks, they leave my colour treated hair soft and since I started only using conditioner on my hair I've also noticed they leave it cleaner and less greasy than regular conditioners do.

I used to use Avon's Planet Spa Mediterranean Conditioning Olive Oil Hair Mask but sadly it is no longer available. This lead to a year long search for a new conditioner to love.
I recently reviewed L'oreal total repair 5 line and I must say I love this stuff. My hair feels light, fluffy, clean, everything I want in a conditioner. I love this stuff.

So this is what I do:
  1. Wet my hair
  2. Use a conditioner in my hair
  3. Rub it around like shampoo
  4. Leave it in a minute or two
  5. Rinse
  6. Rinse more
  7. Repeat again if necessary
If I am repeating with a second conditioning I usually use as the first a cheaper conditioner and then a mask the second time.

I do this about 2 - 3 times a week. I tried out Wen which is a commercial co-poo brand but it just didn't cut it when it came to moisturizing.

So there you go, quick easy and my hair is healthier than ever.

Additional info:
I've been asked about build up.  As I said I had heavy hair for a while until I found the L'oreal mask. If you use a lot of product or find your hair is fine some times a rinse of apple cider vinegar and water can be used to remove any buildup. I don't find this necessary any more but it is helpful at times. Another good thing to use is Neutrogena anti-residue shampoo. I know it is heavy duty but once a month it will take any build up out of your hair.

Although I only wash 2-3 times a week I have done it everyday and found the results just as good and my hair wasn't stripped of it's health.

So I realized today that it has been a full 6 months since I last used shampoo and went 'No Poo', and what a difference it has made.

So as I blogged about in the past, how I found out about it, why I tried it and the different methods, today I just wanted to talk about how great the last 6 months have been for my hair.

My hair is soft and silky and way less frizzy (no longer do I fear looking like my dad with an afro).

I have finally perfected the method by using the following:

Garnier Fructis Strength & Repair Conditioner:
I use this when I have loaded my hair up with products and really want to just get it clean. I usually mix it with another conditioner. We usually have a big tub of it in the shower since both me and my 'husband' use it.

Avon Planet Spa Olive Oil Hair Mask or Goji Berry Mask:
Both of these masks are amazing! My love for them goes deep. The Goji berry version is less thick but seems to do an even better job of moisturizing than the really thick Olive Oil version.
I rub them well into my hair like shampoo, leave on while I do the rest of my showering and rinse.

The only additional thing I do once a month is use some baking soda and water and rub it into my wet hair. This removes all my buildup for hair products.

It has been 3 months since I started my no shampoo experiment. I must say I never thought I would love not using shampoo as much as I do. At first I started this experiment just out of curiosity, now it is a routine and a way of life.

What am I doing??

Well at first I just happened to run across a site that talked about the No Poo method of hair washing, that peeked my interest and I have been hooked ever since.

At first I tried the baking soda and apple cider vinegar method, but it seemed like more work than I liked and I found my hair still needed conditioner and I was kinda afraid of getting vinegar in my eyes.

Now I have decided to do the conditioner method. I wash my hair with a conditioner just like when I used to use shampoo. I wet my hair and rub conditioner into my hair for a minute and then rinse. Once and a while I leave it in longer or conditioner mask instead.  Once every few weeks when I use alot of product I will use some baking soda with water and do a good cleaning before the washing conditioner.

My results???

My hair is soft and clean, full of body and I don't miss the step of shampoo.

Yesterday I read a blog where the writer talks about her second month going shampoo free. I never knew this was an option! Was her hair greas? No! How could this be so? It is called No Poo (really I did not make up this name, it is short for no shampoo I guess).
So the theory is that shampoo is filled with nasty harsh stuff and not good for your hair and if you eliminate it you wont need as much conditioner or as much product.
So far from what I can tell there are two theories on how to go shampoo free.
The first is to take conditioner and use it like shampoo, rub it a lot and work it in, rinse and that is it. This theory initials that most of the dirt/grease/oil in our hair will be released by just rubbing conditioner and warm water on your hair. I had actually tried this in the past by trying a product line called WEN by Chaz Dean. I ordered it through a tv infomercial after a friend ordered and swore by it (and still does). I personally did not find it conditioned enough for my hair. There are other versions of his products that are supposed to be for more dry and damaged hair, but at the time they were not available her in Canada. THis product is not needed though to use this method, apparently any conditioner will work just as well.
The second method is what I tried last night. Take 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda and mix it with a cup of warm water (1 cup for every tablespoon used). Rub into your hair (should not feel gritty, should just feel like water), you can pour it on or spray it into the hair. Rub Rub Rub, like shampoo. Rinse. Then take 1-2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and mix with a cup of water for each tablespoon of vinegar used, apply to hair, rub. Then rinse. That is it. I have read that there is a two week adjustment period where your hair can be greasy. It is supposed to be while your scalp and oils adjust to not being stripped on a daily basis. As well it is recommended to do this process every third day and on the days off to rise you hair with warm water (I guess while you shower).
So how did it work. Well, to be honest I still used conditioner after the cleanse. My hair is simply too dry to live without conditions (at least for now). I must say my hair was CLEAN, super clean, and bouncy. I have never had this much body in my hair. I am sure the process striped my hair of any residue I had which is why it was so bouncy. After the 5 complements I got today (including by a random child that walked by), I would definitely say I would try this again. I will keep you posted on the results.
