Beauty Vixen

This is part one of what I hope is a very long series about vintage beauty products that are still sold today. I decided to hunt down a big old pile of products that have been on the shelves of stores for decades. This included soaps, lotions, balms and lip balms.  I started my project with a bar of soap, and well ended up using it for 5 months straight. Which was great because I loved it, but it didn’t help review all the soaps I could.

I also was at a loss on how to even approach the project. I have tried to write one big post for each category, but there have been no reviews. Instead, for now, I am reviewing each item as I use them. Today that is Unscented Neutrogena Facial Cleansing Bar Original Formula aka Neutrogena Transparent Facial Bar.

This soap has been around since 1954.  Manny Stoloroff, the founder of Neutrogena, went to Belgium and found a non-alkaline soap that was created by a chemist there. He bought the distribution rights and called it Neutrogena.  In the ‘50s, it became popular for those who did not want the harsher soaps of the day on their face, and people were willing to pay a huge price increase for it ($1 vs 10 ¢ for the competitors).

Today the key thing that continues to make it a special bar is that it is dermatologist-recommended.

Review Time:

Now I used this bar on my body for the most part, I only used it on my face a few times.

I have never really liked bar soap, it has always felt like a film is left all over my body when I am done using it. It doesn’t matter if I use a loofa, a poof or even a washcloth, I feel a film after rinsing. This soap never once did that for me. Every time I washed with it, it felt like I used a body wash. It rinsed clean away.

After every use, my skin felt great, never once dry or tight. That goes for my face too, which is surprising since I have very dry skin.

It is completely fragrance-free, which if you are going to use it on the face, is fantastic. It lathers easily with a loose lather. It did a great job of eliminating odour on my body, so I knew it was getting me clean.

Pros:

-              Oil-free

-              Ph of 8 (in the ideal bar soap range)

-              Dermatologist recommended

-              Fragrance-free

-              Easy rinsing

-              No residue

-              Safe for the face (actually recommended)

-              Inexpensive (a 3-pack costs $7.50 to $10.00 CAD)

Cons:

-              Each bar is wrapped in plastic, so it is not plastic-free.

Overall:

Overall I am shocked at how much I like this bar. Every time I use it my skin feels soft, clean and just overall nice. Which is how I want to feel. As someone who generally hates bar soap, I am surprised I did so well right out the gate with trying out this bar. If this was the only body wash or soap I had for the rest of my life, I would be ok with that.

Ingredients:

Triethanolamine, TEA-Stearate, Glycerin, Sodium Tallowate, Water (eau), Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Ricinoleate, Sodium Oleate, Cocamide MEA, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Sodium Stearate, BHT, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Trisodium HEDTA, Sodium Metabisulfite.

Yardley London has been around for over 250 years now, and their products are truly some of my faourite (English Rose EDT will be on my repurchase list for eternity). In Canada you can pick up their products in the scents English Lavender, English Rose and Lily of the Valley. I was recently sent some items inspired by spring gardens to try out, their Moisturizing Body Lotion and Luxury Body Wash in the scents English Lavender and English Rose.

Both scents are incredibly realistic, they smell exactly like their names. The English rose is fresh and vibrant and smells just like real roses. There is a hint of magnolia and cassis in there too. While the English Lavender smells warm and calming just like the real stuff. It has hints of geranium and chamomile in it too which add to that relaxing lavender scent feeling.

On to the body washes!

English Rose Luxury Body Wash / 250ml / $12.99
Yardley London has been capturing the delicate fragrance of English flowers since 1770. Infused with Yardley London’s English Rose fragrance, combining refreshing, light rose with notes of rose bud, magnolia and cassis, this creamy, moisturizing Luxury Body Wash helps maintain the skins natural moisture levels. A nourishing blend of revitalising rose water, moisturizing shea butter, evening primrose oil and monoi oil, rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidant vitamin E, it cleanses and hydrates the skin leaving it feeling soft, smooth and delicately fragranced.

A nourishing blend of relaxing lavender extract, moisturizing shea butter, borage oil and rosehip oil, rich in vitamins A, C and E, it cleanses and hydrates the skin leaving it feeling soft, smooth and delicately fragranced.
Yardley's body washes are clear, lather extremely well, rinse easily and leave no residue on the skin. Pretty much all my checkmarks for a great spring-summer body wash. Although they are clear they do not strip the skin of moisture which is fantastic. They also smell as good as their Eau De Toilette counterparts. Sometimes I am known to squirt a bit into my running bath water and use it as a bubble bath and I will say it dose a great job making bubbles.

English Lavender Moisturizing Body Lotion / 250ml / $9.99

This luxurious moisturizing body lotion is infused with Yardley London’s English Lavender fragrance, which subtly combines fresh, light , calming English Lavender with notes of geranium, chamomile and eucalyptus. Containing soothing Lavender extract, moisturizing shea butter, borage oil and rosehip oil, rich in vitamins A, C and E, it absorbs quickly into the skin to help combat the signs of aging, leaving it feeling soft, smooth and delicately fragranced.

Yardley's Moisturizing Body Lotions has a pump which automatically makes them pretty awesome to me ( I mean I love lotions in pumps, it is just so mess free). The lavender lotion has lavender extract, shea butter and borage oil in it that make it feel rich and conditioning. It is a great lotion to apply before bed, which is when I usually use it because it smells so relaxing, but also after time in the sun because of the lavender oil. The rose lotion has rose water, evening primrose oil and monoi oil.

One pump is enough lotion for one of my arms, I usually do two at once and cover both my arms and hands. The formula is a little but thin but not watery. It isn't greasy either, its a nice level of hydration for my skin in the summer where I want something a little lighter. The scent is strong though, it makes for a great layering effect if you're going to layer if with the matching body sprays (which is exactly what I do in the warmer weather).

Overall I really adore Yardley London's body washes and body lotions. They are great for anytime of year! They have a formula I like and that smell amazing. The lavender is one that I like at night to help me relax, while the rose is my daytime go to (I get complements every single time I wear it from my husband). They have affordable drug store pricing and are quality products. I definitely recommend trying them out this spring-summer.

The seasons are changing and with that I have some new goodies from FareleyCo . Today I am going to take a first impressions look at them.

Invisibobble Sprunchie Multipack Black/Purrfection (2PC)

Hidden underneath luxurious velvet fabric, the invisibobble® ponytail holder contains a classic original, therefore providing the benefits that come with all the classic hair ring. Holding all strands of hair together thanks to its spiral shape, the SPRUNCHIE is easy to remove without compromising on comfort.

This is a double pack of two Invisibobble Sprunchies. What is a Sprunchie, well it is a classic Invisibobble inside a scrunchie. You get all the grip you would expect from an Invisibobble with the style and gentle care of a scrunchy. You get a black one and a cute animal print one.

I was really skeptical of this one but man can it hold my hair well. I is the perfect combo of the two products and I love it.

Invisibobble Extra Hold - The Secret Purple

The double helix spiral shape of the invisibobble® Extra Hold provides maximum, comfortable hold for thick hair. It gently but powerfully holds hair in place for an all day look without damaging the hair, or causing unnecessary tension.
    • traceless
    • all-day comfort
    • hair loving
    • strong grip for thick hair
    • non-soaking

If you love an Invisibobble you will love these. They are meant for thicker hair that needs a bit more hold. They are a doubled up version of their original hair elastics.

I love the strong hold they give, and while I cut my hair shortly after receiving them, I loved how they managed to hold even my shorter hair so darn well without any slipping. I wore them swimming a bunch of time and even then no slipping or hair popping out. Best yet they don't get water logged, making them the best for swimming.

Provoke's Touch of Silver line is meant for those with blonde, white or grey hair. It removes brassy tones and helps keep your hair at its most bright. I having dark hair have yet to try it, but my Mother in Law has white hair and loves all their products.

The Strengthening Purple line's Shampoo and Conditioners are meant to not only colour correct light hair shades, but also protecdt if from damage, making it feel softer and healthier after each use.

PROVOKE Illuminex Touch of Silver Strengthening Purple Shampoo

Brighten your colour and repair damaged hair bonds with PROVOKE ILLUMINEX Touch Of Silver Strengthening Purple Shampoo. Remove unwanted yellow and orange brassy tones whilst strengthening damaged hair bonds in just one wash.

PROVOKE Illuminex Touch of Silver Strengthening Purple Conditioner
PROVOKE Touch Of Silver Strengthening Purple Conditioner uses the most advanced ILLUMINEX formula, which is silicone & sulphate free and developed with AquaPlex™ to deeply hydrate. Enriched with vitamin B for hair that is bright, shiny & strong.
I love makes some fantastic body washes as well as body sprays. I really adore the scents I have previously tried, so I was excited to get to try some new body washes.

I Love Signature Scents Elderflower Fizz Body Wash

It is time to embrace the rejuvenating spirit of summer with this delightful presse, blending luscious fruits and watery cucumber, with delicate floral interludes. This vibrant fruity accord has opening notes of apple & cucumber, leading to a heart of lemony elderflowers and jasmine to create a beautiful floral freshness.

First up is Elderflower Fizz. Now I already have the body spray for this so I knew I was going to love it. It is fresh and light, floral and sweet. Elderflower as a food is something I really enjoy, it is sweet and floral and refreshing, which I find reflected in this body wash as well. There is a mild hit of cucumber and apple to it just making it seem more summery fresh.

I Love Signature Scents Violet Dreams Body Wash

Float away in a sweet, ethereal cloud of soft parma violets, lifted by a luminous medley of Sicilian bergamot and green apple, and leading to a romantic floral heart of white lily, jasmine and violet.

Next up is Violet Dreams body wash. I clearly am loving florals right now, so this one hits the mark as well. It has the essence of violets with complexity of bergamot and sweetness or green apple with another hit of floral with white lily. I just love it.

This Body Wash gently transforms into rich & creamy foam and contains natural fruit extracts. Skin loving moisturisers including Pro Vitamin B5 provides skin softening benefits to leave your body feeling cleansed, moisturised & silky smooth.

As how they perform as body washes? Really well. They lather and rinse well while leaving my body nice and soft. Nothing not to like here, just a very nice body wash.

BeautyLash Brow Tint Kint (Dark Brown)

BeautyLash Tinting Kit tints eyelashes and eyebrows draw attention to your eyes without appearing artificial. Eyelashes are longer and eyebrows are being enhanced and receive a clear and defined outline. Grey or white hair is covered up completely and shine in new, fresh colour. The new 2-step tinting system makes it possible to tint eyelashes and eyebrows on your own in only 2 steps – the application is simple and safe. The colour lasts up to 6 weeks and is smudge and water resistant.

I tried BeautyLash years ago and really liked it. I was always afraid of tinting my own lashes until I found them.

It is a simple two part vegan system that you can use over an over again until you use it up. You can also do your lashes with them. The results are quite good, and since grey hairs are creeping up in my brows they save me a lot of time because I don't worry about my brows every morning.

Make sure to thouroughly cleanse eylashes and brows from oil, dead skin, mascara and lotion prior to use. One package is sufficient for 8 tinting applications.

Perspirex Comfort Antiperspirant (25ml)

Perspirex Comfort Extra Effective Antiperspirant is clinically proven to provide extra effective protection against sweat for 2-3 days.
The Comfort skin care system contains ingredients that hydrate the skin for extra skin comfort. Apply at night to completely dry, unbroken skin. No need to reapply in the morning. Fragrance-free. Not tested on animals.

I have talked about Perspirex quite a bit before, and I still love it. In fact it made my favourites of 2020 list.. I love that it lasts for days even with showering or swimming. I recently went away for 3 days and brought no antiperspirant with me because I applied it before going. It saved me room and I had no worry about getting sweaty even in the middle of the summer.

So... Summer Escapes Bali Breeze Body Mist

So…? Bali Breeze body mist transports your thoughts to lazy and carefree days on the beach. Its mellow notes of coconut, pineapple and pretty orange blossom create a fragrance that is soothing and calming to your senses.
I love a good tropical fragrance, it makes me feel like warm days are still with us. So...Summer Escapes Bali Breeze smells just like a tropical scent should, coconut, pineapple and orange blossoms. It spritzes well and lasts a moderate amount of time for a Body Mist. I really love applying it to my body before getting dressed as well as my clothing.

Overall I am really impressed with everything I have tried out so far. I am loving the Invisibobbles and how they manage to hold up my hair so darn well. I of course love my faourite Perspirex, and am very excited to try some new fragrance and body washes out. If you want to check out these new products they should be popping up at drug stores near you soon or at ShopHali.com.

The weather is getting warmer and my skin care is changing with the weather. Wanting a fresh lighter scent is defiantly one thing I am reaching for now that spring is here.

Finding the perfect Mother's Day gift isn't always easy, but with Yardley London it can be. Yardley London makes some fantastic bath and body products in some pretty amazing scents, but I know my mom would love their English Rose line, and that is why I am treating her to it this Mother's Day.

When I was a child I remember my mom having a vial of rose perfume and when I asked what it was for she dabbed a little bit behind my ears and said 'so boys will fall in love with you'. I never forgot that or that wonderful scent of rose. Yardley London captures that prefect scent of floral, light and sweet roses in this collection and it is just wonderful for spring and summer.

Moisturizing Body Wash
This clear and light wash foams up nice and rich while smelling like real roses. It also won't dry out your skin, which is always a plus.

Moisturizing Body Lotion
This lotion is light and not too heavy, but still moisturizing, plus it has a pump (always a plus). Layering this on after using the body wash is a great way to make the scent of roses last longer.

Fragranced Body Mist
I love Yardley's body mists, a lot really (read a review here), but the rose one has become my favourite these last few month. I can spritz it on in the morning and not feel it is too heavy and overwhelm others on my morning commute but still smell during the day. It is that light and not to heavy kind of scent that I love for the warmer weather.

Perfumed Talc
Talc is that little bit extra that I think a lot of mothers would really like. It isn't a thing that younger people tend to use too much but it is very luxurious and adds another layer of scent to you routine making it last longer. I always have enjoyed talc before bed because of how it made my skin felt and the scent it enrobes me with. There are also some other great uses for scented talc powder, like keeping in your drawers to scent your clothes or for vacuuming (I sprinkle some baking soda and some scented talc and my carpet comes out much cleaner).

Eau De Toilette
This is my favourite item in the whole collection, Eau De Toilette. It smells fantastic and looks amazing in the bottle. The scent lasts all day and it works perfectly with the other items.
Every product in this scent collection is wonderful on its own, but when they are layered together they work even better and the scent lasts even longer. I love how the English Rose scent makes me feel, it is light, summery, romantic and never overwhelming all in one.

I hope you all have a wonderful Mother's Day, I am not worried about my mother's gift this year because I know she will love it thanks to Yardley London.

Lavender is one of those floral scents I just cant get enough of. It is warm and comforting and frankly quite healing on my reactive skin. Come the fall and winter I just want to cocoon myself in the scent at night and cuddle in with a hot cup of tea and my fur babies and call it a day. Lucky for me Le Petit Marseillais makes a fantastic Lavender Honey Shower Extra Gentle Creme Body Wash that makes my night time fantasy routine a reality.
Le Petit Marseillais is a French brand that has been creating sunny French county side inspired scents for over 35 years. Their Shower Creme Body Wash formula is incredibly moisturizing. I tried out their Orange Blossom version last winter when my skin was actually cracking and flaking, I found that the formula manged to clean my skin nicely, smelt amazing and hydrated my skin so well, three things that don't always end up happening with some other body washes. The Lavender Honey formula is just as fantastic and I cannot stop using it. When I use it my skin doesn't get inflamed, cracked or dried. Frankly I am super impressed that a scented body wash can be this gentle, it is actually amazing to me.
Other then the fantastic rich scent of lavender mixed with honey, this body creme has the fact it is such a gentle and hydrating product backing it up as a must buy from me. I have used it also as a bubble bath, and while it isn't meant to be one, it creates some fantastic long lasting bubbles.

Overall I am totatly sold on this brand. I am going to definitely buy some of the other  scents in the line up, White Peach and Nectarine and Cotton Milk and Poppy sound amazing.

Have you tried any of Le Petit Marseillais Products Yet? What is your favourite scent?

I am a big fan of vanilla, I find there nothing plain or boring about it. Did you know vanilla is the second most expensive spice (saffron is number one)? Did you know vanilla comes from the fruit of vanilla orchids? Regardless I love it and its scent is a warm welcome in my routine.

Bodycolgy's Creamy Vanilla line has a vanilla scent that is rich and warm. It is a great option for the summer months because I find it not too heavy but at the same time a bit more sophisticated and floral then regular vanilla.

Moisturizing Body Wash:

This was is so creamy and rich, it creates an incredible lather that I actually had to cut back on the amount I was using because it was just so much. I feel since it is a cream body wash it helps keep my skin extra hydrated and certainly doesn't strip its moisture at all. Bonus, made in Canada (the other products in the USA).

Moisturizing Body Cream:
I like creams more then I like lotions, my skin is just so darn dry it needs the extra hydration. Bodycology's Moisturizing Body Cream is rich and luxurious while not being greasy at all. It absorbs relatively quickly while making my skin feel enrobed in moisturizer that lasts. All this while being in a convenient tube. Most lotions or creams that come in tubes tend to be watery and take a long time to absorb on my skin, so this is a complete win win for me. It has Shea, Cocoa and Jojoba butters blended into it to help give it that richness.

Fragrance Mist:

This fragrance mist is my new favourite addition to my morning routine. As a fragrance mist it doesn't last as long as a perfume but alas it is fragrance mist and that is how they work. I find that if I apply it after the body wash and lotion it adds another layer to scent and extends its longevity. I personally love to refresh with it before I leave for work or after the gym, I also spray my clothes with it and in my hair if I feel it isn't as great as it was when first washed.

I am loving this collection for my day to day skin care needs. The body wash is rich and creates a crazy lather, the lotion is rich and nourishing and the fragrance mist makes me smell great. They also are really inexpensive (retailing at $6.97), making me question ever going to and paying crazy prices for other brands again.

Bodycology's Creamy Vanilla line is available at Walmart and retails for $6.97.

Are you the type that likes to get a head start on the holidays? Well Mary Kay is thinking a head with their latest promo Christmas in October, and to be honest I think they have the right idea. Every year Christmas comes along and I have no time to do anything, so getting stuff done and bought now is the best plan of attack for me.
White Tea & Citrus Satin Hands Pampering Set & Fragrance-Free Satin Hands Pampering Set ($51.00 each set)
The Satin Hands Pampering Sets are a cult classic when it comes to Mary Kay. I remember my mom treating my hands to it when I was ten years old and I have loved it ever since. My hands are the dries and most chap things on earth come the holiday season, they usually end up bleeding. The area right between my fingers gets flakey and thick. Since this all happens and there seems to be nothing I can do to prevent it, I love the Satin Hands sets to help clear it up and keep my hands smooth.
The White Tea & Citrus Set comes with:
  • Fragrance-Free Protecting Softener
    • Moisturize and protect skin, preparing hands for a stimulating.
  • White Tea & Citrus Refining Shea Scrub
    • Blended with luscious shea butter to instantly reveal noticeably smoother-looking skin as it buffs away dirt and impurities and leaves hands feeling softer.
  • White Tea & Citrus Nourishing Shea Cream
    • Shea butter-infused cream instantly melts into skin and leaves hands feeling soft and noticeably smoother even after washing.
    • Absorbs quickly, so hands won’t feel sticky, and it leaves a protective barrier on skin for long-lasting softness.
While the Fragrance-Free Set is the same but without any added fragrance to it.
This really is a must have for me during the fall and winter months. I love how sleek and cute the new holiday sets look this year (really sophisticated).
While I must admit am a rabid fan of the original Peach version of the Satin Hands set, I really like that they are offering a new scent for the holidays. The White Tea and Citrus smells light, a bit more complex and more appropriate for the colder weather. I will probably be using the unscented the most since my skin gets hyper sensitive to all fragrances as the holidays approach (I joke it is groomer hands, but it just seems to really be me).
I also love the improvement to the formulas. The lotion is much less watery for me which means it is it absorbs faster and helps deal with my chap skin more efficiently. The scrub seems gentler too. What isn't to love?
Limited-Edition Mini Eye Brush Set ($20.00)
If you travel to visit family during the holidays this may be the best item for you. It is a set of three mini brushes that are super soft and they come in their own little pouch that really is sturdy (I am not afraid of breaking it).

You get three eye brushes:
  • Eyeliner
  • Eye Colour
  • Eyesmudger
I am definitely in love with this mini set, I may get my one sister in law one of these since she has the oldest and rattiest brushes I have ever seen.

Limited-Edition Be Delighted  Body Wash and Body Mousse Gift Set ($36.00) & Limited-Edition Be Delighted Shimmer Mist ($18.00)
Cute holiday themed boxes, check. Fantastic scent, check.

These products all smell sweet and holiday festive like, almost like candy but not that sweet. If you're a fan of Bath and Body Works Sugar Plumb but find it is just too sweet, you should love this scent.

The Body Mousse is so rich and thick but absorbs super fast without any grease. I have been using it on my legs and arms for the last week and feel so incredibly soft, plus the hubby loves the scent.

The Body Wash smells just as good and is in a great formal that I find leaves my skin nice and clean as well as soft.
This Body Wash and Body Mousse come to gather in a  little set with a cute little matching clear bag (I did not take pictures of it, sorry) with dots all over it just like the product's packaging.

There also is a Shimmering Body Mist that is sold alone, it smells so amazing on the skin after a shower or bath. I am not one for shimmer or glitter on my body, but I decided to try this out and actually really liked that it wasn't over the top shimmer. I probably won't be using it too much though because of my aversion to glitter on my body.
I do think the Body Wash and Body Mousse Gift Set will make for a great gift this holiday season and may be getting my mother one as she is always hinting at me she needs more body stuff.
Overall I really like these items for holiday gifts, easy give and incredibly safe bets. I know so many people who love bath and body goodies that this just screams their names. I think I love the new formulas and packaging for the Satin Hands Pampering Sets the most, they look great and work even better then before.

Do you like to get a head start on your holiday shopping too? Are there any beauty gifts you just have to buy someone on your list every year?
