Beauty Vixen

If I am being 100% honest, I will admit that my skin is just messed up this time of year. The dry weather, the wind, the cold, the dry house, blasting the heat in cars, my already dry and sensitive skin becomes a real pain. Lucky for me I got to attend the launch of Dermalogica's Chalet last night.
Inside the Dermalogica Chalet in Toronto
This Pop-Up spa and store is just what every single one of us needs this time of year. This Chalet is a little winter lodge in the midst of the city. With lavender everything it is also super calming.  Showcasing their UltraCalming products (which feature lavender, hence the calm purple tones), the line helps soothe and calm sensitized skin, which is real problem for a lot of people in the colder weather.
Some Ultracalming products
The two main products I got introduced to were, Barrier Defense Booster and Calm Water Gel.

The Barrier Defense Booster is a concentrated oil booster helps soothes, nourish and moisturize your skin to restore the balance it needs. Not only does it help relieve dryness, it helps reinforce the barrier that it needs to stop further moisture loss. I can say that I love how it feels and my skin is instantly calmer when using.

The Calm Water Gel is also very concentrated and has a light lavender scent to it. The lavender is 100% natural and helps soothe and calm the skin pretty much on contact. Its a water-gel formula that helps hydrate and refresh the skin. It gives a weightless barrier that helps protect your skin from all the irritants in the environment and helps lock moisture in. Pretty much it is a shield for all the tough daily torture we put our skin through.

I love that both products are so soothing and nourishing as well as concentrated. You need so little to treat your whole face.

The Chalet is offering  Skin Hydration FaceFit Session, Skin Rescue Face Fit Treatment, the Dermalocia ProSkin 30 Minute Treatment, or complementary Skin Mapping Analysis, there is a treatment that is right for you and your time frame.
Services offered at the Dermalogica Chalet
I was lucky enough to get a spot in with the ProSkin 30 minute treatment, and I am so glad I did. I got to talk about my main skin concerns, got some much needed feed back and advice, my personal plan as well as a 30 minute custom treatment. My skin felt so amazing after, and I now know more about my skin and what I need to change in my routine to get better results as well as happier skin.

If you have never experienced Dermalogica's Skin Mapping before, I suggest you do that if you have the chance too. It is free and you will learn so much about your skin. You skin gets a zone by zone analysis of its needs and lots of feedback on what you can to to treat it.

Overall I really loved the Chalet and the idea of this Pop-Up, it really makes getting a skin treatment easy and picking up some of your favourite Dermalogica products super easy. Plus it is really fun with all the Chalet details.

This Monday I got to attend a Pro Makeup Artist event at Deciem's latest store in Toronto's historic Distillery District. I haven't been to any artist related events since last years IMATS so I was pretty excited. I was also pretty darn ecstatic to be there with my makeup artist schoolmate, Trisha.
The main focus was The Ordinary's foundation line. We got to play with them, see them in action in a demo and generally learn about all the products Deciem has under its umbrella.
Deciem has 9 brands currently in its production line, with at least three more in the pre-launch stages. This is their sixth store in the Greater Toronto Area and 11th world wide. Oh and hey their Tail Quarters (what they call their head quarters) is located only a few blocks away from this location, which is never a bad thing.
It is such a large and grand store, but isn't overwhelming at all. Products are sorted by brands and easy to navigate.
So what caught my eye? Well The Ordinary of course. I think this must be the most talked about brand out there right now and it is easy to see why. It is so affordably!!! Who doesn't want skin care at a good price? I immediately went and looked at things I had been eyeing online for a long time. I piced up  Advanced Retinoid 2%, Vitamin C Suspension + HA Spheres 2%, Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2%, and Coverage Foundation in 1.2P.

I also got a mini spoon from NIOD to help with not contaminating products in tubs. From Hylamide I got their High-Density Mist, which is water free!!! I am pretty excited about that one. Finally I grabbed a product I am most intrigued by, The Chemistry Brand's Hyaluronic Acid Body Mist, it is a hydrating body spray that is housed in a clear aerosol can, it is loaded with hyaluronic acid to hydrate the heck out of skin quickly without any stickiness or real rubbing required. It felt amazing on my arms and I am so excited for it.
I received a pretty exciting gift bag too. It happened to have The Ordinary's Serum Foundation, Hylamide's HA Blur, NIOD's Photography Fluid Opacity 8% and Photography Fluid Opacity 12%. Oh, and cookie, I got cookies!
I am so happy I went to this store, I had been oohing and awing on Deciem's site for weeks, loading up my cart and then never ordering. I really feel checking out and playing with products in person can really make the difference between a sale or not with me. The scent, the touch the feel all really sold me on these products and I cannot wait to try them out. Plus it is in the Distillery District, where my favourite hair salon (McManus and Campbell) and Vintage Store (Black Bird Vintage) are located, so get to enjoy those area perks to when I head there.

Two Sundays ago, I took part in ChickAdvisor Showcase at Fairmount 's Royal York hotel in down town Toronto. We got to experience some high tea while trying out and review new products. It was quite fun.

First off, they royal York is renowned for its high tea. For the event we had a buffet style version of it complete with all the mini sandwiches and patisseries you could handle.  While we enjoyed these goodies we got a nice introduction from one of the founders, Ali De Bold.
Chickadvisor was founded in 2006 and is celebrating 10 years of reviews and a community of beauty. I was surprised by them because I was celled up to the front with another lady only to be thanked for being with them from the start.  I was shocked, I always loved ChickAdvisor and its  but never thought that I had been with them that long.  I got an extra treat when they have me a Sephora gift card (woot woot).

After this we started testing and reviewing products on the spot.
It's was all around a fun time. I was lucky enough to be sitting with Meredith from EtTuandYou and Eithne from Tea and Nail Polish.

The highlights were, making us take all our makeup off with simple wipes.  The hilarity of asking 100+ won't to remove makeup.  And some colourful wine tasting tips from ---- from Hardy's wines.  Oh and getting us to do your nails with cnd in such a crowded place.  So many laughs and just a good time.

Below are the items we got to try and take home with us.
Simple face wipes, Mary Kay Semi-Matte Lipsticks, The Estee Edit Pore Vanishing Stick by Estee Lauder, L'oreal Paris Voluminous Feline Mascara, Hardy's Wimes, Dove Advance Hair Series Regenerative Nourishment Serum-in-Oil and CND Creative Play Nial Lacquer colour, base and top coat. As well as a very nice ChickAdvisor mug and compact mirror. It was well worth the $45 plus tax I paid to attend.

If you aren't already a member of ChickAdvisor I highly recommended you sign up right now. It's free and once you review 10 things you can join the product review club where you can get free things to review !  Free stuff people. Sign up.

A few weeks back I got the privilege to attend an event at Pure + Simple, in their Yorkville location. In addition to having their own fantastic Canadian made and natural house brand, Pure + Simple sells a full line up of other Canadian Natural brands in their spas.
Not only did I get to learn about the brands, I got to meet the owners and reps from the brands and try out lots of great products.

Healing Haus
Healing Haus' line of products are 100% Canadian (headquartered out of Guelph, Ontario) and are formulated for their maximum potency and effectiveness by Cheryl Karthaus, who not only is the brands founder but also a Naturopath.

With seven formulas the line it features some pretty impressive lotions for the body that feature minimal ingredients for maximum impact. If you have eczema the Skin Soother is probably meant for you, Skin 101 is formulated for those who are reactive to even the lightest of essential oils, while Rest and Repair is for those with cracked and raw skin. If you have have skin there is a formula that you will probably like. I am in love with Refresh which is a Citrus and Bergamot lotion. Meant to sooth the mind and the body this lotion smells fantastic and is quite the stress relief in a jar.

Skin Essence Organics
Skin Essence Organics is a brand that makes products that are organic with freshly sourced extracts and is eco friendly. What makes this line so unique is that there is no water in the products so that they are at their most potent and without fillers. The Facial in a Jar is a powder that you mix to create a potent face mask that delivers in its results.

FitGlow Beauty
FitGlow Beauty is a line of skin care and beauty line that is packed full of active vitamins, humectants and plant sterols. Ingredents like Kojc Acid, wildcrafted Ginseng, Willow Bark and MSN are in their Renew Serum and provide a lot goodness to your skin. Their lip glosses contain Organic Coconut oil, Shea Butter and Jojoba while being 90% certified organic.

World
World is a hair care line that Brian Phillips came up with after developing a sever case of contact dermatitis on his hands. He was advised by a client who happened to be a naturopath told him it was a reaction to something he used regularly. Soon it was revealed to be products he used in his salon were the culprit to his skin ailment. Brian was inspired to create products he could use daily on his clients that wouldn't cause either of them damage.
World is a line of skin and hair care products that contain no parabens, phthalates, sulphates, fragrances or colours while being fully biodegradable and vegan (two products do contain beeswax though).

As someone who bathes dogs on a daily bases, I can fully understand and relate to both Brian's story and the line of products. I also have highly reative skin to fragrances when my skin gets chapped (which is often) so this line really impresses me. I mean Protect is a hair and body moisturizer, what a great idea.

Da lish
Da lish is a cosmetics line that  Toronto native Melanie Cruickshank started when she decided she had to know the ingredients in her makeup. Her friends started wanting it, and complements started rolling in, and Dalish was born. Loaded with anti-oxidants, Shea Butter, Sunflower seed oil and Rosemary leaf extract this makeup line is good for you and looks fantastic.

NuVsio
NuVsio was created by Dr. Brei, who was looking for more effective and natural skin care products. Their focus is on purity though nature and efficiency through science. Pure organic ingredients that do their jobs well and no chemicals, this line is as scientific as a natural brand can be. Their formulas are based on minerals, their science and skin therapy based them.

Sattva Pure
Sattva is a line of natural skin care that only uses the finest quality ingredients and is manufactured in Aurora, Ontario. Natural oils, botanicals, and vitamins are the stars of this product line that is focused on helping skin be at its best without irritation on even the most sensitive of skin. It is also 100% vegan, free of parabens, petrochemicals, phthalates, sls, sles, synthetic colours and synthetic fragrances. It also happens to use organic and fair-trade ingredients in many of its formulations.

Healthy Crunch
Healthy Crunch was also there, they make delicious Kale snack with whole leaf kale, not just little bits and crumbs like other brands. They also make some pretty fantastic flavour options, like Say Cheese! a zesty cheese option that uses nutritional yeast instead of dairy. They also make sprinkles (they call them Krumps), which you can use to top just about anything you like (soup, salad, you name it).  Yum-yum. I'd like to note my mother-in-law gobbled these down so fast, she has a health condition which requires lots of vitamin k, kale is super high in vitamin k...so they went fast.

These Canadian Natural brands can all be found at Pure + Simple locations.

I look forward to trying a few products from some of these brands out in the next little while.
Have you tried any of these brands? What do you love about them?

Dr. Roebuck's is a brand that focuses on natural and effective skin care. It was started by Dr. Roebuck, an Australian doctor who's twin daughters suffered from eczema.
Dr. Roebuck's medical background meant he knew the ingredients needed to treat the eczema and realized many store products had unnecessary fillers and chemicals in them, so he created his own recipe to help his daughters heal. Now those daughters, Kim and Zoe run the company, maintaining its natural and pure approach as well keeping all of their products being Australian made.
With minimal ingredients and maximum potency the brand focuses its products on their purpose and just the ingredients needed to get the job done. There are no fillers, no unnecessary ingredients thrown in for no reason, just pure ingredients that do what is needed to be done. All of this makes their products highly potent and effective. Their slogan "Minimal Ingredients. Maximum Results", kind of says it all.
At this event we got to hear from Kim and Zoe, learn about the line, see new and upcoming products, learn about skin healthy diets, get massages and watch some yoga. I got an amazing hand massage where I got to try out their Body and Hand Wash, as well as their Body and Hand Lotion. Both felt and smelled amazing.
Some of their new offering are Natural Cleansing Wipes, Ultimate Hydrating Serum, Reverse Aging Serum and Face Day/Night Lotion. I'm super excited to have received a few of these products to try out. I will have a review ready in a month or so of trying them out, but lets just say Natural Cleansing Wipes are going to be my new best friend.
You can currently find Dr. Roebuck's line of products at Shoppers Drug Mart and Beauty Boutiques across Canada.

Have you tried anything from Dr. Roebuck's before? What do you think of their products?

Recently the cosmetics brand Quo tuned 16; the brand chose to party it up in celebration of the occasion with a swanky party where they showed off their new 2016 collection.
The party had custom manicures, tasty baked treats from Bobbette and Belle as well all of their new collection on display and to play with.
While I wish I could have gotten a manicure (I love and own many Orly by Quo polishes), my nails were split and my hangnails were out of control, so it would have been a waist. They had a great little sign that featured a bunch of designs that you could get done at one of the manicure stations.
Their new lip products impressed me a lot. There are new lip stains (don't think crazy lip stains, think thin and lightly tinted, like Benetint), Refillable lip glosses (amazing idea), lip velours, lipgloss sets, tinted lip balms (they call them lip cocktails), "Colour Overload" lip glosses (full pigment gloss) and finally new lipsticks that have a fantastic hounds-tooth pattern embossed into them(they are so pretty). There is even a clear lip liner, for those days you need to reverse line your lips to prevent feathering.
The Colour Overload Glosses swatched
In the palette department they have launched some exciting stuff. There are two contour kits and two eye-shadow palettes. The brush in the contour kit is worth buying the set for alone, but the set is also really nice (win-win right there).
They are also mono eye-shadows being launched. All of which come in more neutral shades and are really just pretty for any time of day or night.
For the rest of the face there is refillable Cushion Foundation (amazing) and blush cheek sticks

Brow powder in a tube, a custom brow set, super thin automatic brow pencil and brow enchanting double ended pencil.
Blue mascara, mascara primer self curling mascara to you "holy grail" massacre they have your lashes covered.
Liner wise they have both Micro tipped brush tip liquid liners as well as a vinyl liner joining their new line, all under the name "Art Of Lining".

I was lucky enough to get a sweet Goodie Bag from the birthday party; look for reviews on some of the products on the blog in the near future (spoiler alert: I am loving everything).
In the mean time you can check out Quo exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart's across Canada.
