Beauty Vixen

I decided for 2024 to yet again do a movie-watching challenge. This was my fourth year doing a challenge, and I am super happy I finished it. I challenged myself to watch 75 movies I had never seen before. I did this after two years of failing to watch a select number of new movies and new-to-me documentaries, so I decided to combine the two tasks. I succeeded but by the skin of my teeth. So let's break down what I watched in 2024 and what I plan on doing for 2025.
I managed to watch exactly 75 films this year, most of which happened in the second half of the year.

First off, we went to the drive-in again!
I love the drive-in, and I will never stop loving the drive-in. We get to see two movies and it cost less than $30 for both of us, it is such a deal. We get to bring Bradley along and eat great food. I also get to wear pyjamas! It is all lots of fun. I do prefer spring and fall shows because the sunsets earlier and we don't tend to fall asleep during the second movie as much.
This year we saw Kung Fu Panda 4 with Ghostbusters Frozen Kingdom at the start of April then Inside Out 2 with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in July. We didn't go back until November when we saw The Wild Robot and Venom: The Last Dance. By far the earliest and latest we have gone to see movies there.

In theatres, we saw quite a few films and with the expectation of Twisters, we saw all of them at an independent theatre, Imagin Cinemas. We love it there because they are cheap ($11 movies and $8 matinee) and they have huge reclining chairs.

We saw Dune 2, Deadpool and Wolverine, Twisters, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Alien Romulus, Transformers One, and Gladiator 2 in the theatre this year. I must say it was nice to just go to the movies a lot this year, it reminded me a lot of when we were dating.
I went yet again to Drunken Cinema with my pal Melissa to see Scream movies. This time it was the Sequils, Scream 2 and Scream 5. We really love this series and have now officially seen all the films in the series at the Drunken Cinema experience. I do feel the first time we did Scream 2 the opening scene was so much fun live, but this time there were a lot of newbies and it was surprisingly less lively. It truly is a meta moment to be waving around a glow stick and screaming while a Ghost Face runs around you while you watch that opening scene.
I watched a bunch of bad movies, just in the hopes of watching something new that I had not watched before, which actually made me a bit sad.

Which brings me to my goals for 2025.

I plan on watching 52 new movies this year. That makes it one a week, a realistic goal that I will not struggle to get to by the end of the year. I also plan on making a list of classic movies I still need to watch and make an actual effort to watch them this year (yes, I finally watched Citizen Kane this past year, so at least I can cross that one off the list).

Follow along with me on my Letterboxd this year and see how well I do at meeting this year's goal.

2023 is done, and I thought I'd once again look at what I've been watching. I started journaling my movie-watching habits in 2021, trying to watch 'new to me' movies and I've really enjoyed it. It's made me consciously choose to watch movies that  I would not normally have watched. I have watched more classic movies that I have wanted to watch for years. Plus, as an added bonus, I have been less likely to just sit around and watch half a movie I have already seen a 100 times just because it is on TV (yes, I still have cable, it is included with my condo fees).

I broke last year's movies into two categories, 50 New To Me Films in 2023 and 12 New To Me Documentaries for 2023. I tracked them in lists on Letterboxd.

50 New To Me Films in 2023
First off, my goal was 50 movies that I had never seen before, and I watched 51. 🎊 I did it! I am really happy. I think I may have watched one or two extra films but didn't log them.
I went to the movie theatre only once to see a new film and that was to see Scream 6 with my pal Melissa. We opted to go to see it at a VIP theatre so it would be 19+. Somehow this Scream was rated 14+ in Canada and we wanted to avoid teens, and as a bonus, we could order drinks. We ordered a Scream-themed drink that was soooo massive. We had a blast and I must say this was a fantastic movie, even without Sydney, and with all that is going on I am a little worried about the franchise's future.

I did go to the Drive-In four times, each time for a double feature. I have to say, I love the drive-in and am going to continue to go there as long as possible. I get two films, two people and I can bring Bradley for $28. There is no downside.
We saw Super Mario Brothers and Champions. Champions was way better than I thought it would be, if you have the chance watch it (FYI it was filmed in Winnipeg). I grew up in the 80s and 90s, which means I automatically loved the Mario movie.

We saw a double feature with The Flash and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Neither were super great, I fell asleep during the Transformers. I will say I loved seeing Keaton back as Bruce Wayne and feel robbed we will never see Batgirl.

We went back to see Barbie and Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse. Both are fantastic and I have nothing negative to say about either one.

Finally, we went and saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Blackberry (oh so much Canada in this film). I will admit I fell asleep at during Blackberry, I did catch up with the extended version on CBC though (you can watch it for free on their Gem app).

I also went and did two Drunken Cinema experiences at the Revue Cinema. These are super energetic and interactive experiences held at Toronto's oldest (and not-for-profit) theatre. They have a bunch of fun-themed showings as well as classic films, all at incredibly reasonable prices, you should check them out.
I went and saw Speed (1994) with Melissa. I may have seen this movie 3 times in the theatre in 1994 and then once in the winter of 1995 at Ontario Place Cinesphere. So, yes, I had seen it before. I will say this was the most fun I ever had watching it.

Finally, I went to a double feature there, and saw Scream (1996) and Scream (2021), once again with Melissa. This is always so fun. Seeing the first one and then the reboot together was perfect. I had only seen the reboot last Halloween at the drive-in and loved it. There is nothing like a screaming crowd and a Ghostface running around a theatre to make for a good time. With this screening, Melissa and I have seen all the movies together (all but 6 at the Drunken Cinema, and Scream (1996) twice together).
12 New to Me Documentaries for 2023
I didn't set my goals as high as 2022's 25, and still failed by one. I do think I watched one more but didn't log it, so oh well.

I really want to watch more documentaries, but they almost always are series now and it makes it harder for me.

Please give me some suggestions, because I've got no clue what to watch in this department anymore and I really enjoy them.

Goals for 2024

For this year I have decided to do things a little differently and go back to what I did for 2021, one list, but bigger. In 2021 most of my movies ended up being documentaries, which is why I put them in two different categories. This year I am ditching that and doing just one. I just can't reach those goals, so I don't care anymore. This year I am aiming for 75 movies I have not seen before. If you want to follow along, check out my list here, 75 New to Me Movies for 2024.

Follow me on Letterboxd if you like, I would love to follow you, I love seeing friends' movies and what they think of them. I hope to start writing some reviews on it.

2023 is halfway over, so I thought it might be a good time to look at how I'm doing with my movie watching goals. I did a whole recap of my movie goals from 2022 and what I was hoping to watch for 2023 in my post "2022 Movie Roundup and 2023 Movie Goals". I am currently using Letterboxd to track my progress
First up, documentaries.  This year I said I would watch 12, and I've watched 3. This kind of sucks. Most docs that come out seem to be in series format now and it's just not working for me. I'm going to set aside some time and get working on this asap.  If you have any suggestions, please send them my way, I need inspiration.
Next up, new movies to me. I'm trying to do 50 again and am currently at 22. I think I'm doing pretty good. The new PVR has definitely helped with me recording movies I've always wanted to watch on TCM, as has having Crave/HBO since there is a new movie every week.
So far I've really enjoyed a lot of the newer movies. I went to the theatre once with my pal Melissa. We saw Scream 6. Somehow Scream has become our thing, we have seen all of them together in a theatre, except for Scream 2021 (aka scream 5) because the theatres were shut down at the time (I saw it at the drive-in at Halloween). We opted to go to a 19+ vip theatre so there would be no teens and we could have a drink. Our theme drink was comically large.

The hubs, Bradley and I have gone to the Drive-in twice so far. Once we saw Super Mario Bros and Champions and then we saw Guardians of the Galaxy and BlackBerry. Both were good experiences and I genuinely liked the movies. I truly love the drive-in and hope to go more now that it is open again, we always get to see at least two movies and a great price, plus Bradley gets to come along.
I haven't been really tracking the other movies I've been watching but may start to when we do themes. Last weekend we did a 80/90s parody weekend and watched the Naked Gun trilogy,  National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 and both Hot Shots movies. Being kids of the 80s it was fun to watch them again. I think we'll be watching Airplane very soon.

So far it's been a good six months, I'm not sure I'm looking forward to many other movies so shout out some suggestions to me. Feel free to follow me over on Letterboxd

In 2020 when I had 8 weeks off work due to the lockdown, I stated trying to watch older movies I had just never seen. When 2021 came around I saw my friend Jayne's posts about trying to watch new to her moves each year and it inspired me.

Now for 2021 I said 50 new to me movies and I made it by the skin of my teeth. I found many were documentaries so I made 2022 50 new movies and 25 documentaries.  I kind of failed.

It seems most documentaries are now series and that really put a damper on me watching them. Even when I did, they didn't need to be 3 parts, 90 mins would do. So lesson learned, 2022 the documentary became completely serialized.

As for the 50 new movies, I did that mainly because my mother in law visited and we watched several at a time. It was a good way to kill time at night and wind down.

While I'm thinking of what I want to do for 2023, I thought I'd share my views with you for the past year.

Overall enjoy making myself watch new things.. if it was up to me I would watch the same things all the time because I have cable still (part of my condo plan) and Crave / HBO on the tv. So it's really easy to say 'oh this is on, let's just watch the last half of that' and not think.
I liked a lot of these movies and had a good time watching them. We went to the drive in double feature twice, for the 3rd year in a row ( saw Jurassic World and skipped the second movie and then Black Adam and Scream 5). I also attended a Drunken Cinema showing of Scream 4. My friend Melissa and I have seen each one of their viewing of the Scream franchise there and it is so much fun, hopefully we'll see Scream 6 there in March.

A bunch really sucked, like New Mutants and Nightmare Alley or Reminisence ...oh garbage.

I also got to see some old classics that I just had never watched before like White Christmas and Fiddler on the Roof (seen the play though).
Overall, I really liked this challenge  because it breaks me out of my movie rut shell. I've already PVRed a few classic movies (our condo just upgraded up to PVRs so I'm taking advantage).

I think for 2023 I'm going to just make it 50 new movies again and 12 documentaries, one for each month. If you want to follow my adventures in film I am on Letterboxd.

Let me know what you think of the challenge and what you liked or didn't like in 2022 movies.

We all have favourite movies, even more during the holiday season. My seasonal favourites are a bit unorthodox, but still they are my families tradition. Today I am going to share with you my childhood, adult and all time must watch movies. Hope you like them.

Childhood Favourites:

Watching these movies as a child somehow became a tradition that I looked forward to every year and now that I am an adult I feel the season just isn't complete without them

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966):
Maybe its the Boris Karloff, maybe its the Chuck Jones animation, or just the Grinch's heart growing 3 sizes that day, but darn it I love this movie. It is also a quick watch at about 25 minutes in length you can easily watch it without getting too board.

Now many people are going to ask me how I like the Ron Howard version, I don't, it just doesn't compare to the classic in my eyes.

Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983):
One fond childhood memory of mine was watching the Wonderful World Of Disney every Sunday night. This of course meant the annual holiday special featuring Mickey's Christmas Carol, Goofy Teaching you how to ski and Chip and Dale's tree being cut down to be Plutos' Christmas Tree.  Sadly only Mickey's Christmas Carol still airs on every year (it has aired every year since 1985 on CBC).  I happen to have two Disney Holiday DVDs as well as the complete Donald and Goofy collections, so I can easily watch whenever I want, but usually just Christmas Carol.

This is a cute re-imagining of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, but with Mickey, Goofy, Donald and of course Scrooge McDuck. It's cute and lighthearted and only lasts about 26 minutes.

Honorable Mentions: Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, Frosty The Snowman and A Christmas Story

Adult Favorites:

These are the films I didn't fall in love with as a child, but rather as an adult. Some weren't around when I was a kid, others were and I just kind of missed out.. They all are good family ones, some with some adult humor in them too.

ELF (2003):
Since ELF only came out when I was already 23, it isn't a childhood favourite of mine, but it is still a favourite none the less.

The adorable story of a human child raised in the north pole who truly believes he is an elf, despite his size and lack of elf talents. When buddy learns in his 30's that he is in fact a human, he does in search of his father in New York City. Of course the cutler shock of the real world mixed with his innocence as well as his dad who is on the naughty list equals laughs all around.

Jon Favreau directs this one and Will Ferrell and James Caan star.
It's a Muppet's Very Merry Christmas  Movie (2002):
This is once again a kids movie that came out when I was adult. I love the Muppet's, a childhood favourite. While I loved a tv special that aired for many years in the 80's and 90's it no longer play, so this is as close as I can get to it.

It is once again Dickens' Christmas Carol, this time with Kermit and the gang. It also has a pile of early 2000s pop culture references that are both really dated and hilarious in retrospect.  An example is their Christmas production at the theatre is Moulin Rouge themed and there's a lot of talk about malls being popular. Still I love it.

Scrooged (1988)
I never seemed to have really watched this one as a child, but it turns out it is a favourite of my husband. We watch it every year now and I must say that darn that Bill Murray is a funny guy,

Basically it a comedy with a bit of slapstick retelling modern version Dickens' Christmas Carol.

Honorable mentions: Christmas Vacation and The Santa Clause

Unorthodox Traditions:
The title here should say it all, when people hear these titles they don't think of Christmas, but we here do. These aren't for kids either.

Bad Santa (2003)
It is hard to believe that this came out at the same time as ELF. The hubby and a bunch of other relatives find this film to be crazy funny. I will say while I only thought it was OK at first, it really has grown on me over the years.

Generally the hubby will turn this on at some point Christmas evening once were all full of turkey and maybe a little tipsy.

If you like your humor crude you're probably going to like this one.

Die Hard (1988):
I can't believe I went so long without ever watching this, I think I was 29 before I ever saw it. The hubby was up late watching it on tv and I asked why was it on at Christmas. I quickly learned it takes place on Christmas Eve. I was sold. Ever since then we watch it on Christmas Eve. I also yell when I see it on TV during the rest of the year, "IT NOT CHRISTMAS YET".

This is the first of 5 movies in the franchise, it features a John, a NYC cop visiting his estranged wife in LA on Christmas Eve. Of course there happens to be a crazy amount of bonds in a safe and a bunch of criminals take over the building. John of course has to save the day.
It features Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman as the mains in it.

Super fun bonus time, I found an authorized colouring book for the movie, me and Melissa from Melissa's Musings are going have a fun night of colouring and watching this movie.

Trading Places (1983):
This one takes place between Christmas and New Years, so we tend to watch it on Christmas Day or New Years Eve, but we always watch it.

This one is a great '80's comedy about a Louie, a commodities trader and Billy Ray, a con man have their fortunes switched when Louie's bosses make a bet about what would happen if the one was destitute an the other wealthy. Nothing really goes as planed and a lot of comedy occurs.

Jamie Lee Curtis, Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy star in this film.

Honorable mentions: Gremlins, Die Hard 2 and Lethal Weapon

That is enough bad movie summaries from me, I hope you liked it. The key thing here is these are my and my family's traditions when it comes to Holiday Films.

What are your Holiday Film Favourites???
